If you’re having trouble with the ‘Lost in the Dunes’ quest in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, then we’re here to help.

It can be a bit of a tricky quest, but the orb you receive for completing it will come in handy down the line. Here, we’re going to break down everything you need to take on the 'Lost in the Dunes' quest in the game, and what exactly this mysterious orb does – so read on.

Where can you find the Lost in the Dunes quest?

To find the ‘Lost in the Dunes’ quest in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, you’re going to need to head to the Kara Kara Well location in Gerudo. It is just North of Gerudo Town.

Once in the vicinity, you’ll find a couple of backpackers who have lost their friend, Ponthos. They’re also stood by a large metal orb, which we’re going to come back to later. Until then, you decide to help them out, by leaving through the West Entrance to find Ponthos.

How do you complete the Lost in the Dunes quest

To complete the ‘Lost in the Dunes’ quest, you’re going to need to find Ponthos in the Gerudo Desert. Fortunately, he isn’t too far.

As you leave through the entrance to the desert from where you spoke to the backpackers, keep heading straight ahead and you will find a sinkhole.

Jump into the sifting sand and let it drag you down to a cavern below. Here, you will find Ponthos safe and sound. However, there doesn’t seem to be an obvious exit… so you’re just going to have to make one.

As you explore the cavern, you will find several breakable boulders. There are multiple ways to destroy them:

  • Using Bomb Flowers attached to arrows
  • Using a large, blunt weapon like a hammer
  • Use Yunobo’s Sage Power to charge forward and smash the boulders

Once you’ve smashed enough boulders and explored the caverns, you’ll find a ladder. As you do, Ponthos will join you before leaving up the ladder.

When you follow after him, you’ll find the ladder leads you back up the Kara Kara Well. Seems he wasn’t that far from his friends after all.

What does the Lost in the Dunes orb do?

As a reward for helping Ponthos, he will give you the large metal orb that he and his friends were guarding. This orb is part of the larger ‘Mysterious Eighth’ quest.

This quest requires you to find several metal orbs in and around the desert and return them to their rightful statue positions.

The orb you get from ‘Lost in the Dunes’ is essential for completing this mission, so it’s a good job you found Ponthos quickly. Now you just need to take the orb back to Gerudo Town and continue on your adventure.
