You don’t have to wander around the streets of New Atlantis in Starfield while constantly aiming your weapon in people’s faces - there’s actually a way to holster, or put away your weapon.

Holstering weapons is a crucial mechanic that has been in Bethesda RPGs for a good number of years. Included in both Fallout 4 and Skyrim, it means that players can walk up to NPCs without holding a massive gun or sword in their faces, which would be quite rude in all honesty.

So, here’s exactly what you need to do to holster and put away your weapon in Starfield.

How to holster or put away weapons in Starfield

To holster a weapon in Starfield, simply hold the reload button for half a second, and your character will put the weapon away.

On PC, the default reload button is ‘R’, while those using a controller will need to hold ‘X’. If you’ve rebound the reload function to another button or key, then you’ll need to hold that one down instead.

Once pressed for half a second, you will see your character lower the weapon out of sight. To bring the weapon back again, simply press the reload button once more.

How to unequip weapons in Starfield

If you want to put away your weapons more permanently in Starfield, you can simply unequip them in the inventory menu.

Simply navigate to your inventory and find the item you have equipped under the Weapons tab. Then, select the item you have equipped to unequip it.

Once this is done, your character will no longer be holding the weapon at all, so there will be no need to holster it when you reach populated areas. However, you will need to manually equip the weapon once again to fire it if you encounter enemies.

That’s everything you need to know about how to holster and put away weapons in Starfield.
