In a year that has seen an increasing number of remakes and remasters, Square Enix revealed a remake of Star Ocean: The Second Story during Nintendo’s Summer Direct. Aptly titled Star Ocean: The Second Story R, the remake comes 25 years after the original 1998 classic.

When is Star Ocean: The Second Story R released?
Click to enlargeStar Ocean: The Second Story R will release on November 2, 2023. As confirmed in the announcement trailer, the remake joins the likes of WarioWare: Move It! and the remaster of Super Mario RPG, which are also releasing in the same month.

Do we know the Star Ocean: The Second Story R platforms?

Click to enlargeWhether you’re a veteran of the series or will be just starting with this entry, Star Ocean: The Second Story R is a quintessential JRPG and was the first in its series to be released outside of Japan.
Using traditional turn-based combat, you will be embarking on an intergalactic journey to save the planet, Expel. It was the first title to use many of the elements that subsequent Star Ocean titles have used since, such as:
- Dual Protagonist system
- Fast-paced battles
- Skill systems
- Private Actions
- Multiple endings
Star Ocean: The Second Story R has seen an incredibly detailed visual overhaul, opting for a 2.5D style that has also been used in recent Square Enix titles like Octopath Traveller. It takes pixel character sprites and places them in a 3D environment.
Can you pre-order Star Ocean: The Second Story R?

- Pangalactic Federation Longsword
- Forest Knuckles
- Sunrise Ring
- Set of recovery items (Mixed berries x20 + Resurrection Potion x20)
In addition to the standard edition, there is also a limited collector’s edition of the game. In the collector’s edition of Star Ocean: The Second Story R, players will receive:
- Physical copy of Star Ocean: The Second Story R
- 4-disc soundtrack
- Artbook
- Acrylic stand collection box with several mini stands featuring character pixel art
