With each new update, miHoYo drop new character banners, the system where players can ‘wish’ on the characters displayed for a chance to acquire them in a gacha style system. To gamble for your chance to win a character, you’ll have to navigate through a confusing number of currencies. First, you’ll need to either acquire Primogems from in-game achievements or by purchasing Genesis Crystals from the Genshin Impact Store. These Genesis Crystals can then be converted to Primogems through the shop menu.

Now you have a stock of Primogems, you’ll need to convert these into Fates. There are two types of Fates; Intertwined Fate and Acquaint Fate. Both of which can be acquired in-game, or by converting Primogems. Acquaint Fate is used for Beginner Banners and Standard Wish Banners. The Intertwined Fates will be your focus, as these are used to get characters and weapons from limited time banners.

Although Intertwined Fates can be rewarded for completing quests, these are slow to accrue over time, it is far easier to acquire Primogems and convert them into Fates. For every 160 Primogems, you can create 1 Intertwined Fate.

Now you have Fate, you can use this to ‘Wish’ on items and characters. The game calls this a ‘Wishing System’ but it is essentially a roll for a character or weapon depending on the banner you have chosen.

By wishing on items, you can accrue another currency called Masterless Stardust, or the more valuable Masterless Starglitter, which can be traded into Paimon’s shop for rare items.

If you receive a duplicate of a character, this can be used to unlock their Constellation. The constellation is essentially a skill tree for a character that unlocks more powerful abilities. Constellations can also be unlocked from character quests and as a trade for Masterless Starglitter at Paimon’s Exchange if the character becomes available there.

The wish rate for characters can be slim, as such Genshin Impact have a pity system in place to ensure that players will eventually receive a character or weapon from the banner they have been wishing on. Of all the drop rates, five-star characters are the rarest, with a rate of 0.6%. Due to the pity system, the game guarantees a five-star character win for every 90 wishes spent on a character banner.

For weapon event wishes, the pity system guarantees you a five-star weapon drop at your 80th wish.

Standard Wish Banners follow the same pity system as the Character Event Wish banners, with a randomised drop on your 90th wish.

Unfortunately, accumulated pity is not transferable between different banners. If there is more than one weapon on the weapon banner, you have the option of the ‘Epitomized Path’ which means you can direct your accumulated fate towards one of the five-star weapons on display.
