HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Wasteland Challenges make the game harder in return for an XP boost
  • You can activate the challenges at four Wasteland Beacons around the map

If you feel like Fortnite isn't challenging enough for you, then you'll love what the new Wastelander Challenges can do for you in Chapter 5 Season 3.

This new gameplay mechanics lets you choose to apply a debuff to your character with a tradeoff of an XP boost for everything you do in the game. These penalties can range from taking damage when picking up items to taking damage whenever you stand still.

You'll need to go to specific points on the Fortnite map to start these challenges, which I've listed out below.

Wastelander Challengers are activated at Wasteland Beacons, which are located in four different locations around the map. You can find them:

  • On the coast between Brutal Beachhead and Redline Rig
  • In the mountains between Classy Courts and Grand Glacier
  • At the border of the desert and grasslands between Reckless Railways and Mount Olympus
  • At Rebel's Roost

Once you've located a Wasteland Beacon, walk up to it and interact with it to start the Wastelander Challenge.

There are six challenges that you can get at the Wasteland Beacons, and they're chosen at random once you activate the device. Here are the six different debuffs you might get:

  • Burnin' Hot Items - Take damage when picking up items
  • Full Throttle - Take damage when remaining stationary
  • Jammed Clips - You can't reload
  • Perma-Damage - You can't use Health and Shield items
  • The Ground is Lava - Take damage when you touch the ground
  • Unshielded - You can't use Shields

As you can see, some of these challenges are particularly difficult - especially the ones that don't let you use any healing items to recoup any lost health. When I activated a Wasteland Beacon, I got the Burnin' Hot Items challenger, which made me take a good chunk of damage whenever I picked up any items. Safe to say, I did not survive much longer into the round.

Once you've activated a Wastelander Challenge, you can't deactivate it. The only way to disable the challenge is to get eliminated and start a new match of Fortnite, so ensure that you're confident in your abilities before activating one of the Beacons!
