With a new Assassin's Creed game comes a brand-new setting and time period to explore in detail, so many players will want to know more about when AC Mirage takes place, and where it's set in the AC timeline.

Assassin's Creed: Mirage is a return to the stealth-action formula of older AC games in the franchise, abandoning the RPG design that began with Origins back in 2017. With this comes a bigger focus on a single location in the game, allowing players to explore ancient Baghdad.

If you want to know what time period AC Mirage takes place in, and where it sits in the series timeline, check out our primer below.

Assassin's Creed: Mirage is set in 9th-century Baghdad during the anarchy at Samarra, a time of extreme instability in the Abbasid Caliphate that makes up the game's backdrop, while the silly Assassin vs. Templar stuff we're all used to occurs in the main story.

Specifically, the game begins in the year 861, beginning with protagonist Basim Ibn Ishaq's life as a petty thief before a heist gone wrong sets his life on a much grander course that involves the Hidden Ones.

AC Mirage is the third-earliest game in the Assassin's Creed timeline, with Origins set 900 years prior, and Odyssey set roughly 1300 years earlier.

It comes just 11 years before the events of AC Valhalla, which is where players were first introduced to Basim, and is exactly 338 years before the events of the original game with Altair.

That's all for our explainer of what year AC Mirage takes place in, and now you know more about the game's historical setting and how it relates to the other Assassin's Creed games in the timeline.
