It's only taken him 37 years to do it (well, thousands if you count in-game years), but some gamers think Link has finally put a ring on it for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Up there with Mario and Peach or Leon and Ada, Link and Princess Zelda are two of gaming's most infamous star-crossed lovers.

Giving us some serious Ross and Rachel vibes, the complicated relationship between Link and Zelda has only become more confusing as the many Zelda games have gone on. While Tears of the Kingdom makes it seem like they've got their happily ever after, the actor behind Zelda warns this might not be the case.

Since Breath of the Wild, it looks like things have been going well for the Hero of Time and the long-suffering Hylian princess. Eagle-eyed players theorise she's moved into his humble abode, with Link's house in Hateno Village being filled with possessions like Zelda's journal.

Link and Zelda shippers were overjoyed when voice actor Patricia Summersett seemingly linked the pair for eternity. Discussing Link and Zelda making it official with The Gamer, Summersett said, "I know that [Link and Zelda] are in a relationship with each other, it's active, there's a lot of care and a lot of listening, and I just love that about it."

However, she admitted that some ambiguity is left to us as players, concluding, "I guess in my own life, I can respect and celebrate relationships that aren't conventional." Although it seemed like a pretty cut-and-dry response, Summersett has since backtracked our hopes of Link and Zelda tying the knot.

Zelda voice actor clears up relationship confusion

As the interest exploded with joy and Tingle went to look for wedding hats, Summersett took to Twitter to clear up some confusion. Claiming her words were taken out of context, Summersett explained, "My words are misconstrued and the context is removed, to imply something I did not intend, for the sake of clickbait."

She concluded, "We are all 'in a relationship' w/ others," implying that it might be platonic between Link and Zelda. In a second post, she reiterated, "We are all in different types of relationships—w/ friends, family, loves, colleagues, pets, trees, dubious food... It is not up to me to determine."

There are some raised eyebrows about what Summersett meant and whether she was asked to cool Link and Zelda's relationship at the request of Nintendo. At the end of the day, she's right, it's all up reinterpretation. Still, it's a bit of a c*ckblock for Link.
