FromSoftware has been out of our sights for a little too long, but trust us, Hidetaka Miyazaki and his team have been cooking with their long-awaited Elden Ring DLC. Over two years after we took those tentative steps into the Lands Between, Shadow of the Erdtree is here.

There's plenty that's new here, like a whole new realm in the Land of Shadow and a fearsome new foe in the form of Messmer, but that doesn't mean it's a whole new game. Given that you access the DLC from Mohgwyn Palace, it very much feels like an extension of Elden Ring. With it, a few familiar foes are along for the ride.

Take your own Iron Fist Alexander home

To celebrate Shadow of the Erdtree's release, AmiAmi has released a limited run of pre-orders for Iron Fist Alexander mugs. Priced at ¥4,400 JPY, that comes in at $27.31/£21.62, which isn't exactly cheap for a mug to hold your tea in. Still, it's a must-buy for FromSoft fanatics.

There's a mid-November release date, meaning he'd likely arrive as the perfect Christmas present, although you should get your orders in now if you fancy one. Coming complete with Alexander's signature red top to keep your beverage warm, it's gone down a treat online.

One wannabe Tarnished cheered, "I didn't even play Elden Ring and I want this," while another added, "And there goes my money...." Then again, someone else concluded, "After seeing what’s inside them in-game, imma pass lol."

Shadow of the Erdtree explains the origin of its living pots

As soon as the game was revealed, the rotund Iron Fist Alexander became the poster boy for Elden Ring. However, as time went on (and we dreamed of drinking his liquid innards), the lore behind these strange creatures was never expanded on. Some are friendly NPCs, and some are beefy enemies, but thankfully, Shadow of the Erdtree reveals all.

The DLC finally reveals what's inside the game's living pots, although you'll have to hunt for the answer. The Belurat Gaol prison underneath the Blurat Tower Settlement dungeon holds several of Alexander's fallen comrades. It also reveals the horrifying process of how they came to be.

It turns out that Alexander and the other pot bois were once humans who were dissolved in jars as a cruel experiment. Living pots are effectively just reanimated chunks of flesh that have magically taken over a ceramic vessel.

As noted by VG247, this was hinted at in Elden Ring, with Alexander saying, "As luck would have it, there's a veritable mountain of warriors' bodies right here. If I can just squeeze this bunch down inside me, I'll be a mighty warrior again in no time." Hmm, now we're not sure we want to drink our morning coffee from him.
