Fans have been worried about the future of Call of Duty’s Zombies mode. It’s fair, to be honest - the mode has been passed around from developer to developer, but nobody has been able to capture lightning in a bottle quite like Treyarch.

The series is always at its best in the hands of the development team, and though some of their choices have miffed fans in the past (Tranzit leaps to mind), Treyarch has led the series to become the greatest version of itself it could be. And with a new game, fear was fair.

Luckily, Treyarch is on the corpse case once again for Call of Duty: Vanguard, with its plans for Zombies having been officially announced.

During a press event for Call of Duty: Vanguard, it was announced that the Zombies mode for the WWII shooter will serve as a prequel to the events and gameplay of Black Ops Cold War - also developed by Treyarch.

Sledgehammer Games’ studio head Aaron Halen shared the news, and has expressed his excitement for what he calls the "Call of Duty franchise’s first crossover".

"Of course, while our historians were less helpful with this part of Vanguard", said Halen, "Treyarch has covered providing continuity with some lore while innovating on core gameplay, and we can't wait to share more about Zombies in the weeks and months to come."

This is an exciting notion. Especially because it means we’ll likely see a return to a familiar map once again.

Will Vanguard Zombies Uncover Die Maschine’s Secrets?

The suggestion of the game mode serving as a prologue to the stories that unfold in Black Ops Cold War’s Zombies mode has brought up some big questions. Could we once again get to see Die Maschine?

The expanded remake of Nacht Der Untoten revealed that the beast below was an abandoned Nazi facility from the Second World War, which involved experimenting with particle collision and serving as the battleground for swells of undead. Perhaps we could see the facility mid-development as a new Zombies location?

Only time will tell what direction the new Zombies mode will take, but we can’t wait to see what Treyarch has up its sleeves.
