The Witcher Season 5 tipped to be the last on Netflix
They say you should quit while you're ahead, but when it comes to Netflix's The Witcher, we're not exactly sure it's ahead anymore. While the live-action adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski's books and the CD Projekt Red game series of the same name started out strong, it has since faced a myriad of problems.
We imagine losing your lead star is a pretty major shakeup, and despite accusations the writers of The Witcher have no love for the source material, we'll likely never know the full truth of why Henry Cavill stepped away as Geralt of Rivia. He's soon to be replaced, but maybe not for long.
The Witcher could end with Season 5
Click to enlargeOnce upon a time, Cavill was waxing lyrical about seven seasons of The Witcher. Despite his departure at the end of Season 3, we're still told that Netflix planned to move ahead with at least Season 4 and 5, with Liam Hemsworth taking over as the White Wolf. Unfortunately, that could be your lot.
According to Redanian Intelligence, The Witcher will be bowing out with Season 5. Given that the site is a well-known fountain of Witcher knowledge, we're inclined to believe more than your typical "trust me bro" rumour to do the rounds online.
The outlet notes that while there's no official word from Netflix on the lifespan of The Witcher, it's hearing reports that Season 5 will be the last for the fantasy epic. Redanian Intelligence suggests the final two seasons will be based on Sapkowski's three books: Baptism of Fire, Tower of the Swallow, and Lady of the Lake.
The Witcher Season 5 will likely be delayed
While The Witcher Season 4 was originally targeting a 2024 release, Redanian Intelligence says there's no way it can hit this deadline anymore. Going into speculative territory, they've pencilled in 2025 for Season 5 and a possible 2026 for Season 5. At least we've got a good few years of The Witcher left.
As for why things have been a little sluggish, it's all to do with the WAG and SAG-AFTRA strikes in America. That seems to be resolved (for now), with writer Javier Grillo-Marxuach confirming work on The Witcher Season 4 has resumed.
Once Season 4's scripts are done, it'll be straight over to Season 5 to try and make good on those original plans to produce the seasons back-to-back. With critical pannings and calls for the writers to be sacked, The Witcher hasn't had it easy recently. We just feel sorry for Hemsworth - taking over from Cavill isn't a job we'd envy.
