To say that the recast of Netflix's The Witcher was a controversial one would be a bit of an understatement. However, with Henry Cavill having officially bowed out at the end of Season 3, and the streaming giant trying to lock two more seasons before bowing out in Season 5, the end is nigh either way.

For many, Cavill was the perfect embodiment of Geralt of Rivia, and with him being a huge fan of Andrzej Sapkowski's original book series, he was said to be something of a walking encyclopedia. Sadly, those whispers of behind-the-scenes tensions seemingly turned into something more, with Cavill officially announcing he was done.

'First' images of Liam Hemsworth's Geralt appear online

With work back underway on The Witcher Season 4, fans and haters alike are angling for that first elusive shot of Hemsworth in costume. While we pictured our own dream scenario where Hemsworth would appear in the Season 3 finale to ease the transition, that never happened. We get it's because you want people to tune in for the Season 4 premiere.

Set photos of Season 4 have made their way online, and while the internet has explored with our 'first' look at Hemsworth's Geralt, that's not quite the case. It turns out that you've all been going wild over Hemsworth's stunt double, and if you look a little closer, you can tell it's definitely not him.

Despite us still not having seen Hemsworth in costume, that hasn't stopped the venom from flowing. One critic grumbled, "This dude in the picture works visually better as Geralt than Hemsworth 😆." Another said, "Even the costume looks downgraded 💩," and a third concluded, "No thanks I'm out."

Others were less harsh, with someone else chiming in, "It's like a book canon! I'm so excited to see Liam as Geralt." They could be in the minority, because before Hemsworth has even put on his blonde wig, there are already legions writing off The Witched as being 'done.'

We understand you're protective of your favourite franchises, but it's rare that we've seen such vocal hatred. This hasn't gone unnoticed, with Ciri actor Freya Allan asking fans to take it easy on Hemsworth. Speaking to Collider, the star admitted she feels "sorry" for Hemsworth:

"I don't want to speak for him, but from what I've understood, I feel like he's really wanting to try and bring the heart. He's been training. I feel sorry for him, honestly, because, number one, that fan base can be very attack-y, and it's not an ideal situation to be in taking up someone else's role.

"But I'm really excited to see what he does. And he's such a lovely guy. I just hope that people give him the time of day, you know?" While it's a lovely sentiment, we doubt the ever-triggered Witcher-Verse fans will see it that way. Hemsworth's full costume reveal could turn things around, but we wouldn't like to place a bet on it.
