It's no secret that you can throw a pebble in any direction in the gaming industry and you'll hit a zombie game. The Walking Dead is one of the most famous, and even if we've moved on from Telltale's narrative masterclasses, Robert Kirkman's comic series continues to deliver game after game.

It's impressive to see that The Walking Dead is still going, especially after attention seemingly dropped off massively from AMC's live-action series and its various spin-offs. But now, it seems that the games in the franchise are starting to feel that heat.

The Walking Dead: Betrayal has lasted three months

That's got to be a new record. In a pretty brutal reveal, it has been announced that Skybound Entertainment's The Walking Dead: Betrayal will be completely removed from Steam on December 15, with development also set to cease.

"After considering a variety of paths forward, and with a great deal of discussion and reflection, Skybound Games and Other Ocean Interactive have decided to stop development on The Walking Dead: Betrayal," reads a post from the team.

"Despite the hard work put into the game, we were not able to find a path to build the spirited community of backstabbers we originally envisioned." The game was only released to the public in September, so it's a shame to see the project bite the dust before it had a chance to flourish.

The Walking Dead: Betrayal fans will get a full refund

The blog post shared by Skybound Games has confirmed that fans who purchased the game will be getting a full refund. There's a link to an article that details how exactly they can request it. Despite Betrayal being billed as an eight-player multiplayer where deception was the aim of the game, it was hardly the next Among Us.

It's shocking that the team is doubling back on the game's existence to such a degree that it doesn't intend to keep players’ money, but it's probably the best thing to do. Even though it's upsetting to see such hard work go to waste, the gaming landscape can be just as brutal as The Walking Dead. Rest in peace, Betrayal - we hardly knew ye.
