The Callisto Protocol Won't Be Set in The PUBG Universe

Though it may not seem that way on the surface, the upcoming sci-fi horror called The Callisto Protocol was initially intended to be a part of the PUBG universe. It's bizarre, we know.

We've recently been offered a little peek behind the curtain at the game, which looks incredibly unique and immensely spooky. So if you weren't in the know, you'd never have clocked that it had anything to do with the battle royale title. It has much more in common with the Game Director's other title, Dead Space - and now, it looks like it's embracing its solo roots.

Is The Callisto Protocol Set In The PUBG Universe?

As the spiritual successor to Dead Space, The Callisto Protocol, has now officially dropped all of its previous ties with PUBG, as revealed by game director Glen Schofield. In a Tweet, Schofield has said that "The Callisto Protocol is its own story and world," in defiance of the previously confirmed narrative connection to the battle royale game.

"It no longer takes place in PUBG universe. It was originally part of the PUBG timeline, but grew into its own world. PUBG is awesome, and we will still have little surprises for fans, but TCP is its own world, story, and universe." Sorry then, don't expect any chicken dinners in The Callisto Protocol.

So, it looks like there may not be as many connections to the world as we may have initially thought, despite a hint from Schofield that there'll be a few easter eggs peppered through the game - but that doesn't stop it from looking fantastic.

What Does The Callisto Protocol Look Like?

We've also recently been offered a new look at The Callisto Protocol in a fresh series of screenshots, showing off a look at the game's protagonist and some of the creeps you'll encounter along the way. The Callisto Protocol stars Josh Duhamel as Jason Lee, a cargo ship pilot who has to blast his way through a space prison on Jupiter's moon of Callisto.

The screenshots were officially released by GameInformer as part of its new issue, and it's just as gorgeous as it is freaky. With feral-looking monsters and a lingering camera over the shoulder, the stench of Dead Space is all over this one. The terrifying title looks like an absolute treat, and though it might not be connected to PUBG, it's still going to scare the hell out of us. Perfect.
