Fans are already looking to the future of Call of Duty after the launch of Modern Warfare 2. Well, that didn't take long. It's the opposite of boredom that has spurred conversation about what's yet to come, with a passion for the Call of Duty series and its legacy that keeps us talking about the next big thing.

Although Modern Warfare 2 has proven to be the fastest-selling Call of Duty game of all time already, the series could just be getting started. But one rumour about an upcoming game looks to have been quashed.

Is Advanced Warfare 2 Coming From Sledgehammer Games?

Though the original Advanced Warfare was incredibly controversial when it first launched, a report from WhatIfGaming indicated that the futuristic Advanced Warfare 2 could be on the horizon from Vanguard developers Sledgehammer Games. It rattled the industry, but now, there's a new report that contradicts these claims.

The update comes from Insider Gaming and suggests that whatever project Sledgehammer Games is working on next, it's in such early development, it'll likely to fold over and change. This means that any indication that Advanced Warfare 2 is happening is likely to have been altered.

We're sure someone out there is disappointed by this move, but the game was met with such controversy, it's hard to imagine a landscape where fans would welcome Advanced Warfare 2 with open arms. That's especially after the disappointment that Sledgehammer brought with Vanguard.

Sledgehammer Games Won't Be Back Until 2026 At The Earliest

This news is to be expected, but equally, it's not likely that we're going to see a new Call of Duty title from Sledgehammer Games for a while anyway. As it seems like Call of Duty intends to start putting games out once every two years - beginning with Modern Warfare 2 - it's likely that Treyarch's offering will come next in 2024, followed by Sledgehammer getting a shot in 2026.

Even though this isn't set in stone, it's the likely outcome and is much more probable than a new Advanced Warfare game. Unfortunately, we're trapped in a never-ending cycle where players refuse just to enjoy the game that is currently out. As for Advanced Warfare 2, we'd sooner predict a Ghosts sequel, to be honest.
