Thanks to the lauded legacy of Zelda games, we always knew a sequel to 2017's The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild was going to be big. Still, we didn't realise just how big Tears of the Kingdom would be - throwing us into the air and having us dive into the chasms of the Depths.

While some say others should shut up shops in hopes of being Game of the Year in 2023, Tears of the Kingdom comes packed with more than enough to keep us busy for years to come. With a reminder of why the series is so great, the conversation has turned to when the Zeldaverse will paraglide into another medium.

Tears of the Kingdom team are ready for a Zelda movie

Video game adaptations are all the rage these days, and while we finally seem to have left lows like the Rock-led DOOM in the past, HBO's The Last of Us and Illumination's The Super Mario Bros. Movie have turned around even the harshest critics. So, where is our Zelda movie?

Speaking to PolygonTears of the Kingdom Producer Eiji Aonuma and Game Director Hidemaro Fujibayashi admitted they'd be into the idea of a Zelda adaptation similar to The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Given that the portly plumber has grossed over $1 billion at the box office, Zelda could be a licence to print money.

"I have to say, I am interested. For sure," admitted Aonuma. "But it's not just me being interested in something that makes things happen, unfortunately." Fujibayashi added, "Maybe the voice of the fans is what’s important here."

There's sure to be plenty of love for a cutesy Zelda movie getting the Mario treatment, but for others, the scope of a live-action outing is too good to pass up. Only recently, fans were blown away by a series of fake posters that featured Tom Holland and Emma Thompson as Link and Zelda. We also love the idea of Idris Elba as Ganon.

Haven't we been here before with Zelda?

Fantasy series have had a similar resurgence recently, with Amazon's The Lord of Rings: The Rings of Power going head-to-head with HBO's House of the Dragon. As Rings of Power is the most expensive series ever made, we dread to think what the budget of a live-action Zelda series would be.

Then again, with it sure to be the hottest ticket in town, the fantasy castings of Elba, Meryl Streep, and Danny DeVito might not be that outlandish. Annoyingly, we were tantalising close to seeing a live-action Netflix Zelda series, which was apparently axed when someone leaked the announcement ahead of time.

Zelda's animation style means it would be relatively easy to turn it into a Mario movie-esque blockbuster, but just imagine if we got a live-action Zelda. Either way, if we finally get a Zelda movie in whatever form, we're sure there will be tears of joy.
