Rumoured Resident Evil 9 delay could lead to an unexpected remake
Something smells rotten at Capcom, and it's not the shuffling corpses of T-Virus-infected zombies or Albert Wesker's attitude. According to one insider, the much-hyped Resident Evil 9 could be delayed, leading to the developer scrambling to fill this gap in the Resident Evil universe.
The decaying confines of the Spencer Mansion are a distant memory, and 28 years after Resident Evil debuted, the series is a Goliath of the horror genre. Following the success of Resident Evil Village, hopes are high for RE9, but if it is delayed, what game will be next to pick up the blood baton of the Resiverse?
Resident Evil 9 could be delayed
According to @RinoTheBouncer, Resident Evil 9 was originally slated for a reveal later this year and pencilled in for a 2025 release. While the idea of an internal delay is devastating, it comes with the caveat that a different Resident Evil game will take RE9's slot.
The OP goes on to ask what we'd like to see replace RE9's original release date, suggesting the likes of a Resident Evil 5 remake, Code: Veronica remake, or even Revalations 3. After fans recently rallied around Revalations, the idea of the long-rumoured Revalations 3 would be a popular one.
Resident Evil is a franchise back on the rise, and after the lauded success of the terrifying RE7 in 2017, Village went even bigger in 2021. A four-year gap between sequels fits the idea of RE9 supposedly releasing in 2025, although it doesn't sound like it's happening.
Despite details on Resident Evil 9 being thin on the ground, we've heard that multiple Resident Evil games are currently in development. Whether remakes or something completely new, it's an exciting time to be a fan of the shuffling series.
Give us Code: Veronica, you cowards
Click to enlargeFor many, there's an obvious choice. You can keep your Revelations 3, and we can wait a bit longer for Resident Evil 5. Given the importance of 2000's Resident Evil – Code: Veronica in setting up the story of Chris Redfield and Albert Wesker for Resident Evil 5, we're surprised it hasn't been locked in.
Importantly, if we don't get a Code: Veronica remake before Resident Evil 5, we're worried it will never happen. Given the way things go down between Chris and Wesker in RE5, it wouldn't make sense to then go back to the events of Code: Veronica.
The end of 2023's Resident Evil 4 remake definitely made it seem like a Resident Evil 5 remake is next on the docket, however, a Code: Veronica remake hasn't been completely taken off the table. With its 25th anniversary coming next year, we can't think of a better time to reintroduce the world to Alfred Ashford.
