Capcom is loading its pistols and barrelling toward its all-star Resident Evil showcase with what will (hopefully) be our first real look at the upcoming Resident Evil Village. The eighth main series entry in the zombie shooter series looks like it will be taking a back to basics approach similar to the critically acclaimed Resident Evil 7. Despite being a direct sequel to 2017's soft reboot, fans have noted there are some seriously Resident Evil 4  vibes about Village. With this in mind, some have asked whether it could tie into a potential Resident Evil 4 remake.

On January 21, Capcom's Resident Evil Showcase will not only show off Village, but also reveal the future of the franchise. With a reinvigorated fanbase and upcoming live-action series for Netflix, Resident Evil is faring a lot better than the T-virus-infected zombies that have made the games flourish. The idea of a Resident Evil 4 remake would follow neatly in the footsteps of Capcom's remakes of Resident Evil 2 (2019) and Resident Evil 3 (2020). However, we might be jumping the gun here.

Is Capcom teasing a Resident Evil 4 remake?

In the countdown to the Resident Evil Showcase, the official @RE_Games Twitter has started sharing videos from its past titles. On January 17, the account posted an egg emoji and then showed RE4 protagonist Leon S. Kennedy adding it to his inventory. Players quickly jumped on the hype bandwagon that this confirmed the long-rumoured remake for the showcase.

Following the Tweet, players posted their excitement. One wrote, "Ooohhh do I sense a remake of RE4", while another gushed, "I’m trying to remain calm". Others weren't convinced by the idea of a RE4 remake. Sorry to throw water on the flames on fandom, but confirmation might be a little premature.

The problem is, the account wasn't specifically highlighting Resident Evil 4. The countdown has involved several games featuring a tweet with an emoji, followed by a character adding it into their inventory from various games. January 18's Tweet included Chris Redfield adding a herb to his Resident Evil 5 inventory.

An eagle-eyed gamer wrote, "Y'all in the replies gotta calm down. Lol. They're using footage from older RE games because we've had seven days since the showcase's announcement and since there's 7 mainline RE games, they're showing the menus one game a day until the day of the showcase".

Will there be a Resident Evil remake?

Following remakes of RE2 and RE3, it makes sense that Resident Evil 4 is next. Also, the quick turnaround that Capcom has managed to churn them out in 2019 and 2020 suggests we could see the next entry at some point this year. Then again, we're in the midst of global pandemic and gaming schedules have been thrown out the window across the board. A Resident Evil 4 remake has been teased for months now, while the showcase would be the perfect time to make the announcement.

Back in 2005, Resident Evil 4 hit the GameCube with style and sold over 10 million copies when it became a cross-platform juggernaut. As well as stylising the popular over-the-shoulder mechanic we see in so many modern games, Resident Evil 4 is rightly held as one of the greatest video games of all time. We've seen players try and recreate it in HD before, but that's nothing compared to what an official remake from Capcom would look like.

Even if the tweet wasn't specifically aimed at a Resident Evil 4 remake, it's entirely possible the showcase will announce it. Finally, there are lofty expectations the showcase could announce a whole "remastered" collection or maybe even a Resident Evil 5 remake as well as one for Resident Evil 4. There's only a matter of days to wait, but for the time being, we're in the dark about what's really going on. A RE4 remake might not be coming in 2021, but we're guessing it's out there somewhere. Either way, the idea of a Resident Evil 4 remake is one rotting corpse that won't stop clawing its way out of the grave.
