Resident Evil 4 critics unimpressed by Ada Wong DLC
It's been a Wong time coming, but finally, Capcom has confirmed that 2023's Resident Evil 4 remake is getting its own DLC. Before the revamped version of the 2005 GameCube game even arrived on the scene, an Ada Wong-centric Separate Ways DLC had been leaked.
While we'd expected Separate Ways to launch relatively quickly after the base game's release, we've been sitting, twiddling our thumbs and dreaming of the day Ms. Wong gets her time to shine.
Thankfully, you don't have long to wait, as Separate Ways is coming for free on September 21.
Resident Evil critics come for Lily Gao
In a tragic case of toxic history repeating itself, the haters have once again come for Lily Gao. Although Gao only had a fleeting appearance as Ada in Resident Evil 4's main campaign (just like the original), a vocal minority turned against her and even branded the character as the "worst" part of the game.
Things got so bad, Gao spoke out on the situation and then locked down her socials. By the sounds of it, Gao is once again providing her vocals and likeness to Separate Ways' Ada, and to be honest, why wouldn't she? Unfortunately, this hasn't gone unnoticed by her critics.
When Separate Ways was announced at the PlayStation State of Paly, someone wrote, "Sucks, she is by far the worst thing about the remake. Her voice is so bland and emotionless. She sticks out more so due to the other characters having excellent voice acting."
Responding to the news she's coming back, another added, "Unfortunately… her RE2 remake VA was perfect," and a third said, "Ugh, makes me wanna play the game in Japanese.." Despite Gao having played her in the live-action Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, some refuse to accept her as Ada Wong.
Is a Resident Evil 5 remake next?
Click to enlargeIf Capcom's recent crusade to remake the Resiverse wasn't already a clue, the RE4 remake's post-credit scene might as well have said, "Albert Wesker will return." The brief teaser revealed the franchise villain as the one behind Ada's arc, with a hint at the Las Plagas infection reaching West Africa.
As Resident Evil 5 came out in 2099, there were questions about how Capcom would reinvent it in the vein of the earlier remakes. Still, with RE5 often behind held as one of the series' worst, and being criticised for racist undertones, it's arguably the one that can be overhauled the most.
There was a bit of a wait between 2020's Resident Evil 3 remake and RE4, and with Capcom fast running out of mainline games to remake, we'd be happy for a bit of a gap. As for our hopes of a Code: Veronica remake, Capcom hasn't necessarily counted it out yet. In the meantime, let's hope Separate Ways finally gives Ada the credit she deserves.
