Resident Evil 1 Remake key art ‘leaks’, but take it with a fistful of salt

Resident Evil’s series of remakes have been a genuine blast so far. Whether it's Resident Evil 2's Police Station, last year's Resident Evil 4 Remake, or the short, but sweet, Resi 3 one, there's a lot to like for fans of the iconic franchise - and that's not even including the small matter of new mainline entry Village.

And now, a new “leak” has appeared that indicates a new remake to come - but you might not want to get too excited about it just yet.

Resident Evil 1 Remake has been leaked - and debunked

A new teaser image has appeared online that claims to be promoting a brand new remake in the Resident Evil series developed by Capcom, but fans have been quick to point out that it could be very fake.

The banner features the lower half of a zombie’s face, grimacing with rage, with a logo for “Resident Evil 1”, claimed to be launching on January 17 2025, with additional logos along the bottom indicating a launch across PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam.

It’s a convincing image that hints at a full Resident Evil 2-style remake of the first game in the franchise (that many players thought we’d never get since it's already been remade), but community notes attached to the tweet have claimed that the image is likely a fake. Though their suggestion that “creating a 3D zombie model with logos is easy” is a little reductive, it is true that hoaxes have plagued Resi fans, and this could easily be yet another - especially given it dropped right before April Fools' Day.

Fans are taking to the replies of the “leak,” with many accepting that it may well be false - but it won’t stop others from being excited.

It’s hard to blame those ignoring that the leak could be fake - after all, a full remake of Resident Evil could be the last remake of a Resi classic before it’s forced to turn to games that missed the critical mark. We’ll take it over a remake of 5, that’s for sure.
