Unless you've got a time-travelling DeLorean and are Doc Emmett L. Brown in Back to the Future Part III, a visit to the Old West is a little outside the realms of possibility. That being said, one crafty modder has given us a taste of these cowboy capers by making Red Dead Redemption 2 playable in VR. Yee-haw, we can taste the sasparilla from here. As a successor to 2010's Red Dead Redemption, Red Dead Redemption 2 is actually the third in the Red Dead series and served as a prequel to Red Dead Redemption.

Set in 1899, the bullets flew fast as Red Dead Redemption 2 focussed on a new protagonist called Arthur Morgan. Shown in both first and third-person, RDR2 let players climb the ranks of the Van der Linde Gang and shoot their way around this open world, or try and be a humble cowboy with a good heart. Like the first game RDR2 was a massive hit, so it's no surprise it still gets so much attention three years later.

What does Red Dead Redemption 2 look like in VR?

UploadVR got up close and personal with Red Dead Redemption 2 in VR and has posted 27 minutes of gameplay to whet Arthur Morgan's whistle. The mod is the work of developer Luke Ross, and for £8 a month, you can subscribe to his Patreon for access to Red Dead Redemption 2 in VR. All you need is a copy of the game, a PC, and a VR headset. Be warned though, the VR mod doesn't exactly run smoothly in Red Dead Online and could also get you banned. Still, if you want to experience the single-player campaign in a new light, why not try it out?

We already know all about Ross' modding credentials thanks to the fact he previously showed off the R.E.A.L. virtual really mod for Rockstar's GTA V. In a similar way, you can swap Los Santos for New Austin. On his Patreon, Ross writes, "Red Dead Redemption 2 can now be played in VR from start to finish...50 to 160 hours of amazing gameplay that can finally be experienced the way we VR fans always wanted!!" Even if Rockstar can't give us a VR Red Dead Redemption 2, at least someone can.

What do fans think of Red Dead Redemption 2 in VR?

UploadVR listed Ross' GTA V mod as one of the best around, and there was similar praise for Red Dead Redemption 2 in VR. In the latest review, UploadVR applauded the mod but criticised it for a currently unfinished state. The site summarised, "Even with the quirks, though, it’s really impressive to finally see Red Dead 2 running inside a PC VR headset. Climbing the mountains in the opening 30 minutes proved to be a genuinely scary experience and aiming is more intuitive with your head".

Ross has also set his sights on adding VR capabilities to CyberPunk 2077 (good luck) and Horizon: Zero Dawn, but with his time being taken up by mastering Red Dead Redemption 2 in VR, we imagine they're a long way off yet. There's a growing popularity for games in VR, with the pants-wetting experience of Resident Evil 7 in VR showing why more AAA developers should adopt it. Unfortunately, there are no signs that Rockstar plans on officially rolling out a VR mod for Red Dead Redemption 2 or any of its games. For now, it's over to fans like Ross to make our dreams come true.
