PlayStation fans slam Resident Evil 4 Remake
The argument about last-gen games rages on, and while we know not everyone has been able to get their hands on a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series yet (or can't afford the price tag), others are asking when we'll cut the cord and let the PS4 and Xbox One drift out to sea.
If there's anything that proves the difference between new-gen and last-gen capabilities, it's Capcom's Resident Evil 4 remake. Gaming has come a long way since we first wielded the chainsaw controller on the GameCube in 2005, meaning an RE4 remake is well overdue.
PlayStation fans slam the Resident Evil 4 remake
Digital Foundry tested all console versions, meaning PS4 and PS5 went head to head with Xbox Series X and Series S. Although there were whispers of an Xbox One version, it never came to pass.
When the video was shared on Reddit, one player said, "On the ps4, the frame rate dips a lot. Enemies look like they are recorded using stop-motion animation. The wall textures of some buildings are so low rez it's very noticeable when playing. This is just from playing the game in the first three chapters so far."
Another added, "I mean, it's kind of obvious the game wasn't intended to run on PS4 hardware as they didn’t even bother making an Xbox One port." A third concluded, "Sniper rifle scope is basically unusable on base ps4, the framerate tanks into seemingly single digits on my console."
The PS5 release has been praised for the best use of the DualSense controller since Returnal, but for a game that's being praised as near-perfect, it's the PS4 version that's dragging it to the grave. Across the board, most agree we should be playing on a souped-up PC.
PlayStation remains committed to last-gen gaming
If you thought the end of last-gen gaming was nigh, you're wrong. Even as the PS4 winds down, PlayStation Studio Head Hermen Hulst made the bizarre promise that the gaming giant will look at PS4 ports on a case-by-case basis.
There are continued calls for games to become new-gen only. Gotham Knights did it (although it didn't make much difference), while Star Wars Jedi: Survivor has solely focused on newer consoles and PC to deliver the best it can.
Hogwarts Legacy is still awaiting its last-gen release, and given that its console drop was plagued by glitches and performance issues, we dread to think what this will be like. Good luck to anyone planning to play on the Nintendo Switch in July.
Across the board, we've seen the last-gen struggle for a while now. The original PS4 release of Cyberpunk 2077 dropped to a dismal 10-20FPS but has since been improved. With the Resident Evil 4 remake being called "unplayable" in some combat scenes, it's a worrying trend that needs to be stopped like Ramon Salazar.
