When Overwatch 2 was announced, the main pulls were a long-lasting PvE presence (including multiple story modes) and a revamped gameplay system that moved to a 5v5 team size instead of the previous 6v6.

The latter change of the squad sizes was first perceived as controversial but has since become relatively comfortable for players again - now that the Hero pool has been tweaked multiple times. In a shock move, it looks like the change is being reverted and that 6v6 is on its way back.

In a recent blog post, Overwatch 2 is looking to roll back the years with a return to 6v6 in certain capacities. "We’re exploring how we can test different forms of 6v6 in the game to gauge the results," said Game Director Aaron Keller.

The blog cited some issues with returning to 6v6, such as average queue times and optimisation now that Overwatch is much more high-tech, but there is a keen sense of ambition to at least re-trial 6v6 in certain game modes.

A switch back to 6v6 would now see Overwatch 2's two biggest selling points as completely nullified, as PvE has officially ended, which has opened up discourse as to whether the sequel title was even necessary at all.

"We had six years of 6v6 play tests. It was called Overwatch 1. Just change it the f**k back. Overwatch 2, as a sequel, is a complete failure and 5v5 sucks," said one angered fan on a popular Twitter post.

Another said, "No PvE story missions. 6v6 is gonna replace 5v5. They're buffing the s**t out of tanks. Somehow we ended up back at Overwatch 1. Incredible."

A third added, "Crazy concept: They should’ve left the game alone. Ruined their monetization for 0 reason. I ditched single-player. Changed the format. L."

Keller didn't note when the 6v6 tests would be rolling out and whether they would be public, but the blog post infers that the changes could be imminent.
