It's been a hot minute since we've seen Donkey Kong in his own adventure. Our last outing with Donkey Kong was Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze back in 2014, and despite its Switch port in 2018, it never quite got the love it deserved.

The DKC series is obviously iconic, but its more recent iterations are dismissed as continuations that are too late. Still, Donkey Kong Country Returns and Tropical Freeze are absolute masterclasses in the 2D platforming space - paying loving homage to the series' legacy while innovating in their own rights. DK may have laid dormant since then, but that could finally be about to change.

Is A New Donkey Kong Game On The Way?

He's finally here. Performing for you. After the circulation of rumours that Nintendo EPD was working on a new DK title for the last year, it looks like we finally have some kind of confirmation that a new Donkey Kong title is on the way - though its developer is still under wraps.

As discovered by Twitter user KRoolKountry, Nintendo has updated the trademark for Donkey Kong. Alongside the standard business jargon is a newly added section for "downloadable programs for portable and electronic consoles." Hmm.

What Could This New Donkey Kong Trademark Update Mean?

Of course, it's easy to jump to the conclusion that this means we're likely to get a new 3D Donkey Kong game from the Super Mario Odyssey team. Or, what about a brand-new continuation of the Country series - but the results could be equally mundane.

The second popular theory is that this means that Donkey Kong 64 is on its way to Nintendo Switch Online. Maybe, we could even wish for a collection of DKC titles akin to Super Mario 3D All Stars. All of the above is just a pipe dream, for now, so we'll just have to wait to see what this becomes.

The return of Donkey Kong is an exciting prospect that has us pounding the floor with excitement. It's especially hopeful if that grouchy gorilla is getting the same treatment that Kirby got in The Forgotten Land. We're very much looking forward to welcoming back the leader of the DK crew.
