When you think of Nintendo, you likely imagine Mario, Link, or Donkey Kong - but the company's latest trailer is a marked departure from the colourful titles associated with the Switch manufacturer.

Dropped with little fanfare, Nintendo has revealed a trailer simply dubbed 'Emio', which shows a character standing with a paper bag over their head. It's pretty unsettling, with quick cuts zooming in on the smiley face painted onto the bag and looking at his hands.

Who is Emio?

The video description simply says "#WhoisEmio" with no further information given. There's a website live, too, which simply moves between shots of 'Emio' with different expressions on his paper bag face while he stands still.

The character is referred to as "Smiling Man" according to the website's page title, and the speculation among YouTube comments is running rife.

"Is Emio the third Mario Brother?" one asked, while others have suggested it's a tease for a new horror title. Others joked that it's tied to a Luigi's Mansion 1 remake that'll ramp up the scares.

Whatever the case is, a trailer that says "This video contains scenes that some viewers may find disturbing. Viewer discretion is advised" from Nintendo is a real collector's item.
