The success of the free-to-play live service game has been immensely lucrative for the gaming industry, but its reign is truly beginning to grate on players. Many shooter fans are begging for something with a little more depth than the typical free-entry, battle pass, open-world shooter.

Players are struggling to engage with new competitors that are running for a crack at the successes of Warzone and Fortnite. And now, it looks like the dormant Battlefield series wants a piece of the pie.

New Battlefield could add a free-to-play battle pass structure

In a classic case of failing to beat them and conceding to joining them, a new claim maintains that Electronic Arts is working on a new project in the world of Battlefield. It will supposedly serve as a free-to-play battle royale.

The claim is made by Insider Gaming, which suggests that the upcoming full game in the franchise will come packaged with a battle royale game, much like Call of Duty did with a rebooted Modern Warfare back in 2019. The battle royale is apparently in production at Ripple Effect and is paying close attention to the strategy for the success of Warzone.

However, the main title accompanying it is thought to be a return to the roots of Battlefield with 64-player matches, four classes, and a newly rebuilt destruction system. This is a detail that will likely thrill fans of Battlefield’s popularity peak during Battlefield 3 and 4.

What do we know about Battlefield's return?

The battle royale project is expected to join its siblings as a part of the "new Battlefield Universe" that EA CEO Andrew Wilson hinted would begin with a new mainline title in 2025. Insider Gaming claims that the title is aiming for release in October, much like many Battlefield games before it.

It's no shock that Battlefield is lurching into the battle royale world, especially as that's where all of its major competitors live. Following the failures of Battlefield 2042 after it was pitched as the 'future' of the franchise, it's time to try something different. But, as the BR bubble comes close to bursting, how successful can the new venture be?
