Nothing can last forever, but 11 years after GTA Online revved into our lives, it's hard to imagine a future where we don't jump into Rockstar Games' online multiplayer. GTA 6 is peeking around the corner ahead of its 2025 release, and with questions about GTA Online's future, the latest news has us worried.

Rockstar has kept us fed with regular GTA Online updates, namely the massive Heists overhaul of 2015. 2024 has continued the smorgasbord of content via The Cluckin' Bell Farm Raid, The Chop Shop, and Bottom Dollar Bounties. Still, we knew it was only a matter of time until we moved to pastures new.

Rockstar update could spell the end of GTA Online

Trusted GTA leaker TezFun claims that the devs are working on a public version of the GTA Online Mission Creator. With this script being added during the Bottom Dollar Bounties update, it suggests it's on the way in the not-so-distant future. There's a file for "public_mission_creator.ysc" but it's currently empty.

The idea is that a public Mission Creator would allow us to play user-generated content. Seeing how popular roleplaying on the GTA RP servers has been, it's clear there is a market for creativity among the fandom. As Bottom Dollar Bounties hasn't exactly been praised as imaginative, it could be time to hand the reins over to us, the players.

An overhaul like this would be one of the biggest in GTA Online's history. However, some think this could mark the endgame of its lifespan. Allowing us creative freedom to create our own missions might be construed as an end-of-life feature, ensuring that GTA Online can carry on while the team moves over to focus on GTA 6 and its own online contingent

Responding to the news, one fan said, "It would be sick to have that for the December DLC for a final send-off for GTA Online." Another added, "Makes a lot of sense to add before end-of-life support. User-generated content has proven time and time again to be efficient to keeping the community alive."

Assuming that GTA 6 launches with some form of 'new' GTA Online, we should still have a few updates before the OG has to bow out. It's a double-edged sword because as much as we'd love a public Mission Creator, it definitely suggests it could be part of Rockstar winding down work on GTA Online.

Whatever is going on, most have resigned themselves to the idea that GTA 6 will have a whole new GTA Online. Similar to how Warzone stepped aside for Warzone 2.0 (before it became the only version), most agree that GTA Online's ancient servers wouldn't be able to handle the new-gen GTA 6.
