Despite its divisive nature, Modern Warfare 2 has been a top seller. Old-school fans despise the title, with its new-generation players being favoured and the core game being adapted for the 'noobs', yet they bought it.

Those who haven't played in years were charmed into buying it from the name alone, and part-timers were promised the world with a game built exactly for them. So, it's no surprise that Modern Warfare 2 has smashed the record books for Call of Duty franchise sales.

In fact, sales have been so good for Modern Warfare 2, that just four weeks after its release (and Christmas shopping still not even in full swing for many), the Infinity Ward title has already obliterated the Vanguard tally.

Modern Warfare 2 Tops Vanguard Sales In Just Four Weeks

Throughout November, Modern Warfare 2 became the best-selling title in the United Kingdom, according to GSD charts, and has already surpassed $1 billion worth of purchases worldwide.

The game has also surpassed the number of units sold that Vanguard racked up, despite the WWII shooter being out for over a year.

Coincidentally, within four weeks of release, Modern Warfare 2 has become the third-best-selling game of 2022, with Elden Ring topping the charts.

How Has Modern Warfare 2 Sold More Than Vanguard Already?

Part of MW2's sales does come from free-to-play players, with Warzone being quite a contributing factor to its figures. However, the multiplayer sales have been vastly greater than Vanguard's, with Activision previously confessing that "Vanguard had failed to meet their sales expectations".

Vanguard did also have free-to-play content too, though, with the developers opening up the multiplayer game to anyone on multiple weekends throughout 2021 and 22. Modern Warfare 2's first free-to-play weekend is coming in eight days.

MW2's player base will only get larger as Santa's sack of presents gets lighter, which means we're far from close to seeing how popular the recent Call of Duty game can become.
