Video game remakes, remasters, or whatever you want to call them, have been the industry standard for years now.

The video game industry, much like the film industry, lives for nostalgia, and few gamers would turn down the opportunity to see their favourite classic titles reimagined for the new generation of consoles. Upgrading games from yesteryear is common practice now - and though we might decry the widespread lack of creativity it brings, secretly, we love it a bit.

And now, some absolute bangers are set to make a comeback for the current generation.

It has been revealed that Rockstar Games' most forgotten gems, Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne are lined up to get remakes of their own for the current console generation.

A surprise announcement appeared online from Remedy and Rockstar Games, announcing that the first two games will be redeveloped with an attitude that will be "in line with a typical Remedy AAA-game production".

"We were thrilled when our long-time friends at Remedy approached us about making the original Max Payne games," said Sam Houser, the founder of Rockstar. "We are massive fans of the work the Remedy team has created over the years, and we can't wait to play these new versions."

It's certainly unexpected to see that Remedy is taking over the development of the remakes - but in a way, they're absolutely perfect for it.

It's nice to see that Remedy is stepping up to the plate to tackle Max Payne, as they're bound to do a great job.

They've proven that remakes aren't too far out of their wheelhouse with Alan Wake Remastered, and Control has served as a showcase not only of a mastery of movement that would be necessary to adapt the game's Bullet Time but their work in gorgeous environments proves that a new-gen remake under Remedy's watch could yet be a brilliant return to form for Mr Payne.

Max Payne's comeback has been a long time coming, especially after the sorely underrated Max Payne 3 - but he's finally on his way. It's about time.
