Eidos-Montreal has already had a bit of a "ruff" time with Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, but with the developer confirming a certain furry friend is on the way, we're looking forward to a brighter future for Star-Lord and the rest of these rag-tag rogues.

Following the lukewarm reception of Crystal Dynamics' Marvel's Avengers, critics were less than impressed that you'll only be able to play as Star-Lord. Still, Eidos-Montreal has stood by its decision, and promised that while it's only a Star-Lord game, you'll still feel like you control a whole team. At least we know Peter Quill will be in some good company.

What role will Cosmo the Spacedog have in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy?

Square Enix has released a new cinematic for Cosmo, which shows off the Russian astronaut and his litter of puppies. We don't know where they came from, but to be honest, we don't care - they're adorable. In the small cutscene, the action hones in at Cosmo and the Guardians on the Knowhere base. Here, Cosmo is seen chasing his tail, playing fetch, and growling at Rocket Racoon. Maybe he doesn't trust the antagonistic trash panda?

Hyping Cosmo's arrival, the developer explained, "A very, very good boy with a lot in his doggie dish, Cosmo is a former Soviet space dog currently serving as both Knowhere’s Chief of Security and father to a litter of Russian space puppies. Utilizing a combination of psionic and telepathic abilities that allow him to communicate with humans, raccoons and trees, Cosmo will prove an invaluable ally to the Guardians throughout their travels to the deepest, darkest corners of space."

Even though Cosmo might not be one of the "core" Guardians, he's poised to win over a whole new legion of fans when the game releases.

What else do we know about Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy?

As highlighted by the Cosmo trailer, Guardians of the Galaxy will let you influence how a scene plays out depending on what dialogue you choose. With this in mind, your playthrough should be wildly different to someone else's. The main team will follow the New Guardians of the comics - which is the same lineup used for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

With Star-Lord at the forefront, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Rocket, and Groot are all integral members of the squad. Elsewhere, we guess other major players like Yondu, Mantis, and the Collector will have parts to play. Despite those who've already written off GotG, it's earned praise by confirming it's a wholly single-player adventure that won't have microtransactions - for a change.

Looking at the fan-favourite status of the Guardians (thanks to the MCU), we're personally excited to see what Eidos-Montreal can deliver. Cosmo is also a bit of an unknown - due to the fact he's only appeared in a cameo capacity - so it'll be fun to see him in action for the game. Either way, we can't wait to pat this good boy on the head and tickle his tum.

Find out when Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy releases on October 26.
