Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 Remaster Is Closer Than Ever

Alien vs. Predator, Freddy vs. Jason, Godzilla vs. Kong - some pairings are just made to butt heads. In the world of video games, one of the best-loved is seeing the Mortal Kombat gang go up against a villainous Superman and co. in the Injustice games. For others though, that's nothing compared to Wolverine clawing Resident Evil's Jill Valentine to death. 

Long before Injustice was pairing the might of NetherRealm's fighter series with those spandex-clad supes, and even before Smash Bros. had Donkey Kong pummelling Jigglypuff, X-Men vs. Street Fighter was showing the potential of pop-culture crossovers. As the franchise grew, we've hoped for a next-gen version of the beloved Marvel vs. Capcom 2, and apparently, we're nearly there.

Is Marvel vs. Capcom 2 coming?

Talks surrounding a remaster of the 2000 classic have been moving forward. Following its original release in Japanese arcades and on the Dreamcast, Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes was ported to the PlayStation 2 and original Xbox, before later additions saw it hit PS3 and Xbox 360. With the title's last release being a forgotten iOS release back in 2012, it's about time MvC 2 got some lovin'. 

In an interview with GamerHubTV, Digital Eclipse's Mike Mika claims Capcom and Disney have been approached with the idea of a remake. Digital Eclipse created Backbone Entertainment, which was the developer behind Marvel vs. Capcom 2. 

"We’ve begun some discussions on that right now and we’re trying to see how far we can go", said Mika. "But ultimately, at the end of the day, it’s really not up to us. So all we can really do is just make the best case possible and try to make it easy for them, and see if they’re interested." Despite Mike having high hopes for the project, it would take permission from Capcom AND the House of Mouse.

What happened to Marvel vs. Capcom 2?

The history of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 doesn't exactly fill us with much hope. Digital Eclipse was behind the 2009 port for the PS3 and Xbox 360 digital storefronts. When Capcom lost the rights to Marvel characters, it was pulled in 2013. More recently, there's been a resurgence in fandom, with a #FreeMvC2 campaign bombarding the Twitterverse.

Mika also reflected on the legacy of Digital Eclipse's time with MvC 2. "In some ways, because we’re the last ones to touch that game, we feel kind of like the kid that’s part of a divorce", he said. "I don’t have any insight between Capcom and Disney. I know them both pretty well, and they’re great to work with."

He said he can't move for messages from the #FreeMvC2 campaign, which is amazing - but a little daunting. Although Mika stopped short of confirming a remaster is in active development, it's the best news we're heard in a while. 

In recent years, Digital Eclipse has worked with both sides on the likes of the Disney Afternoon Collection and Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection, so if anyone can join these two sides, it's got to be Mika.
