Like A Dragon: Yakuza is Amazon Prime Video's next big videogame adaptation
Fresh off of the huge success of the Fallout TV show, Amazon has not only set its sights on its next video game adaptation - but it's coming soon.
A Like A Dragon: Yakuza series is coming to the Prime Video platform, and it'll debut on October 25, 2024, meaning there isn't long to wait.
Like A Dragon: Yakuza is coming to Prime Video this year
As revealed by Variety, the series will be a live-action show starring Ryoma Takeuchi as Kazuma Kiryu and directed by Masaharu Take and Kengo Takimoto.
Masayoshi Yokoyama, Studio Head of Like A Dragon developer Rya Ga Gotoku, will serve as Executive Producer. The six-episode arc will be available in Japanese with subtitles or with a dub in thirty different languages. The first three episodes will debut on October 25, while the second half will arrive on November 1.
As per Variety, "The series’ story is set in two time periods, 1995 and 2005, and follows the life, childhood friends and the repercussions of the decisions of a fearsome and peerless Yakuza warrior with a strong sense of justice, duty, and humanity."
That sure sounds fitting of Like A Dragon to us, and Yokoyama had this to say on the adaptation:
“Since the day I first put pen to paper on the original 'Yakuza' script, I’ve never once thought about revisiting any of my work on the series. It’s because I understand all too well the challenges and hardships that come with remaking a finished title."
"However, if I were ever sent to the past through some kind of cosmic joke, this is the experience I’d want to create. If I had to go through the wringer anyhow, I’d want to make the most engaging versions of Kamurocho and Kiryu Kazuma I could —and this show has it all."
“While the games let you experience their world through the subjective lens, this adaptation will be the ultimately objective way to enjoy the show. I have no doubt that fans of the series will be drawn to how it brings the games to life and adds new surprises. Newcomers, I’m sure will find themselves invested simply in the gritty realism of the show."
Just last week, Netflix announced a Minecraft animated series, while The Last of Us Season 2 is currently filming, suggesting the small screen is just as appealing to gamers as the silver one.
