Riot Games have pushed the boundaries of gaming this year. The challenge of holding the League of Legends World Championships in an offline setting despite the global pandemic can be described as nothing less than a resounding success. With groundbreaking CGI typical of the developers’ nature, the World Champions showing was spectacular, with the likes of K/DA highlighting how far Riot Games have come.

The launch of their newest FPS shooter, VALORANT, also took the world by storm. Branching out from the MOBA that is LoL, VALORANT’s 5v5 search and destroy recipe has been well-received and now the developers are looking to diverse again.

This time, Riot is looking to expand on the world of LoL, by adapting the popular game into an MMO. Vice President of Entertainment at Riot Games, Greg Street, confirmed via Twitter that his role has been adapted to continue the development of the League universe, before adding that they are now hiring to help develop an MMO.

A League of Legends MMO has been on the fanbases wishlist for some time now, allowing them to dive deeper into the experience with their favourite champions. With a deep lore, the MMO will likely help embed the fantasy world’s background outside of summoners rift.

Back in 2019, Riot Founder Marc Merill teased the development of an MMO coming in the future, although it wouldn’t become a reality “any time soon”. Now, after global lockdowns has left many people with spare time to rack their heads around new and innovative schemes, it appears Riot are putting the ball in motion.

No time frame for the project has been offered, meaning it could take a number of years to develop, especially with the depth that League of Legends has. However, it’s assuring to know that in the future, the world will be expanding and becoming much more immersive.
