Is Spider-Man 2 dev working on another Marvel game after Wolverine?
The Adamantium claws are out over at Insomniac Games, and after saving the day as Peter and Miles in Spider-Man 2, there's the ambitious Wolverine game that's sure to slice its way up the charts. But, what comes after this?
Although once known for the Ratchet & Clank games, Insomniac has made a name for itself as the Master of Marvel. We're still yet to explore the potential of a Marvel Gaming Universe, but now that Insomniac has two major Marvel IPs under its belt, there are hints it's about to be three.
Insomniac is working on mystery AAA game?
With Spider-Man 2 releasing in 2023 and Wolverine's release window still being kept under wraps, you'd assume Insomniac will be busy for the foreseeable future. It now looks like an unannounced project is also in the works, so let's open the floodgates and start the rumour mill whirring on what it could be.
In an interview with Full Sail University, Insomniac Project Director Erin Eberhardt confirmed she's working on an "unannounced" AAA game. Even though she wasn't ready to reveal the unannounced game, she said she's excited about what Insomniac let them "experiment with and play with."
With news of another Insomniac game, fans have been guessing what it could be. A Ratchet & Clank, Resistance reboot, or another Marvel game. Please be the next Ratchet or Rivet game!," cheered one, while another added, "For the love of God! Please be Jak & Daxter! I would lose my mind if I learned that Naughty Dog gave them the rights."
Another championed a Spider-Man 2 spin-off for Tony Todd's Venom. Returning to Marvel, someone else suggested the frankly brilliant idea of an X-Men title: "They’ve been hiring for a multiplayer game. My guess is X-men. Wolverine is the best first step to introduce all types of mutants into Insomniac's Marvel universe."
Where is our Marvel Gaming Universe?
Click to enlargeIt could've all been so simple. 2018's Spider-Man included Easter eggs for Doctor Strange, Black Panther, and Daredevil, with all of them being viable ideas for a spin-off. Then again, players were also left confused about Crystal Dynamics' Marvel's Avengers being a completely unrelated title.
There was also Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy that branched out on its own and was unrelated to the Spider-Man or Avengers. The slate of Marvel games is all over the show at the moment, with EA Motive's Iron Man outing, Monolith's Black Panther, and Skydance New Media's Black Panther/Captain America game.
None of these appears to be connected, but if Insomniac was wise, it would capitalise on the potential of its own gaming universe. Rocksteady is doing this (albeit a little too late) with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Wolverine already has a Hulk tease.
Whatever Insomniac is working on, the team isn't ready to reveal what it is yet. If you were really smart, you'd create an Across the Spider-Verse-esque game where you get to play as the various Spiders of the Spider-Society.
