Henry Cavill's Superman Departure Gives Hope To Witcher Return
Well, that didn't last long, did it? Like a flash in the pan (no, not Barry Allen), Henry Cavill returned to the role of Superman in the DC Extended Universe... then swiftly departed.
It's a bird, it's a plane, no, it's Henry Cavill's fleeting role as the Man of Steel. With a reshuffling of the DCEU slate, he's once again out as Superman, but does this mean he's ready to suit back up as Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher?

We always knew the Marvel Cinematic Universe's James Gunn taking over the DCEU would lead to some casualties, but little did we know it was the entirety of the Snyderverse. First, it was Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman 3 that kicked the bucket, and then, Gunn confirmed he wouldn't be continuing with Cavill.
The man himself has shared his sentiments, posting an emotional message on Instagram that reads: "I have just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and it's sad news, everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman. After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn't the easiest, but that's life."
It's clear that Cavill was just as blindsided as us by the news, and although it's a shame that the long-rumoured Man of Steel 2 is being cast into the realms of great superhero movies that were never made, Gunn has big plans for the character.
Posting on Twitter, the Guardians of the Galaxy director confirmed he and DC Studios co-president Peter Safran have completed their "master plan" for DC. Seemingly burning everything to the ground and starting from scratch, the revamped DCEU will cast someone new as a young Superman.
Giving us some Spider-Man: Homecoming vibes, this won't be a Superman origin movie but will instead pick up with a more junior version of Kal-El and his bespectacled Clark Kent alter ego. There's no further information, but expect the fan castings to go into overdrive.
Could Henry Cavill Return As Geralt Of Rivia?
The real kicker is that the timing of Cavill's return to the DCEU and departure from The Witcher line up perfectly. There are growing reports that Cavill left Netflix's fantasy epic for Superman, which would be a bummer now that he's out of the role.
After Gunn's announcement, The Witcher quickly started trending on Twitter. Liam Hemsworth was also trending, but not for particularly nice reasons. Some are saying that now Cavill has been freed up, he could once again put on his blonde wig to play the White Wolf.
As great as it would be for the U-turn of the century, we just don't see it happening. For a start, the unceremonious sacking of Hemsworth wouldn't make Netflix look any better than Warner Bros. Also, the likes of showrunner Lauren Hissrich have already championed this "new" era of the series with Hemsworth as Geralt.
Still, the casting of The Hunger Games star is a sticking point for many. Anything related to The Witcher is being bombed over negativity that Hemsworth is replacing Cavill. At least having over 300k sign a petition to sack the writers and put you back as the lead must be a pretty great feeling for Cavill at a time he needs it.
We'll have to wait and see how things evolve with The Witcher season 3, but as we gear up for the changing of the guard as Hemsworth takes over from Cavill, anything could happen. One thing's for sure, The Witcher fans want the GOAT back.
