Guardians of the Galaxy 3 sparks hopes of video game sequel
James Gunn is setting his sights on pastures new, as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 marks the end of his time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With the franchise overlord waving goodbye to the sci-fi series in style, fans are looking back at the legacy of these ragtag rogues.
Away from the trilogy of Chris Pratt-led movies, the Guardians of the Galaxy have found a different fan base thanks to the underrated video game of the same name. Eidos-Montreal's Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy might not have set the charts alight, but in the aftermath of Vol. 3, players are asking for a sequel.
What happened to Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy?
Click to enlargeWhile Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy reached for the stars in 2021, the action-adventure title was largely marred by the disappointment of Crystal Dynamic's Marvel's Avengers. Although Guardians carved its own way with a wholly single-player experience, no microtransactions, and no DLC, it fell beneath the radar.
In April 2022, Senior Narrative Director Mary DeMarle told Radio Times, "I think we're gonna leave you in suspense," when asked about a sequel, leading to hopes one could be on the way. DeMarle also said that the title had a major boost to its player base thanks to Game Pass, but sadly, a sequel wasn't meant to be.
Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy also scored well critically, and currently, boasts 80/100 on Metacritic for PS5. It's hard to pinpoint what went wrong, but ultimately, its disappointing financials sealed its fate. The sales led to Square Enix selling Eidos-Montreal to Embracer Group, which then shuttered the studio - nixing all hope of Guardians 2.
Fans want a Guardians of the Galaxy sequel
With players going back and enjoying Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy to get a dive into the comics ahead of Vol. 3, the Twitterverse has come alive with love for the game. One tweet saying it was the perfect example of "right place, wrong time," has had nearly 19k likes.
Cheering for a hopeful resurrection, one wannabe Star-Lord wrote, "Square Enix did Guardians dirty and I hope the devs are able to make a sequel to it after being cut loose from them." Another added, "Hopefully with how much people loved 'Guardians Vol. 3', they'll give this game a chance again (myself included)."
Someone else wrote, "This game is so slept on," and a fourth said, "Absolutely fantastic game which nails that signature Guardians tone through the voice acting, the humour and the story. Not to mention some beautiful visuals!"
A fifth summed up what really went down and concluded, "If only it came out before Avengers the game. It's really good and it's unfortunate that so many people compared it to that awful live service game." These days, all eyes are on Insomniac's Marvel offerings with Spider-Man 2 and Wolverine.
With Gunn gone and the Guardians presumably taking a break in the MCU, we say there's no better time for someone to cash in on the love of the team and deliver another Guardians game to fill the gap until they return to the movies. We can only dream that Star-Lord and co. will blast off again soon.
