Fans Think GTA 6 Will Be ‘Announced In 2022’

Moving at the speed of grandma's mobility scooter, it doesn't look like Rockstar Games is living up to the high-adrenaline hype of the Grand Theft Auto series when it comes to announcing its next entry. While the runaway train that is GTA V is still going strong nearly eight years after it was first released, even the most patient players think they've waited long enough for news on what comes next. Well, don't hold your breath. The latest Rockstar realists think GTA 6 won't even be announced until 2022.

Back in 2013, Grand Theft Auto V came racing onto the scene as the fifth main entry in the already established GTA franchise. Coming a long way from the humble roots of 1997's top-down crime caper, GTA V fit neatly into the HD Universe and blew the competition out of the water. Just like Call of Duty: Warzone went hand in hand with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, GTA V was bolstered by GTA Online. However, did anyone really expect GTA V to become the most profitable entertainment product of all time? It's a crown Rockstar has held onto for long enough, meaning fans are demanding even a sliver of GTA 6

Will GTA 6 be announced in 2022?

The idea of "When will GTA 6 be released" started doing the rounds on Reddit. One fan posed the question to the wider Redditverse, and at the time of writing, 3.1k people have cast their vote. Giving options ranging from this year to 2025 or later, the general consensus is Rockstar will finally wave the checkered flag next year and announce GTA 6 in 2022. Of course, this is just the musings of the ravenous GTA fanbase. Personally, we think Rockstar might wait until the GTA V anniversary in 2023 to do a massive overhaul of the game and add a tonne of GTA 6 content to merge the two worlds. If this was the case, it would make sense that devs are already hard at work on GTA 6 and could announce it in 2022 for a 2023 release.

Looking at why 2022 seems like such a popular choice, various redditors aired their views on the post. One wrote, "E3 2022 tied into PlayStation's conference. I also believe E3 will come back in full swing in 2022 with all companies coming together again after the pandemic. Q4 2023 release most likely. I can't see them exceeding ten years without a new GTA title, and five years without any title. GTA Online is a money maker still, but unless that GTA V engine change over is true, I can't see them putting much more into it".

Another chimed in, "I've been saying this for the past year, so I'll stick with it. Announcement: April 2022". However, there was also a lot of support for some kind of announcement in 2021. With the gaming world trying to keep some sort of normality in the midst of a global pandemic, a GTA 6 announcement in 2021 would be some seriously good news.

What would GTA 6 being announced in 2022 mean?

During the discussion, most noted that a GTA 6 announcement would likely lead to a 2024 release. Rockstar's usual rule with the likes of Red Dead Redemption has been an announcement followed by a two-year wait until release. The idea of having to wait until 2024 seems like an achingly long way away, but then again, this is all just speculation. It's important to remember there's a proposed next-gen remastering of GTA V coming this year, which promises to offer more than just a graphics update.

If GTA V for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S is the rumoured overhaul we're hoping for, it gives Rockstar every opportunity to add in the first hint at a wider world and teasers for GTA 6. It can finally put those whispers to bed on whether we're going to be getting a full-blown Vice City sequel. Then again, if Rockstar has been putting all its efforts into remastering GTA V, has work even started on GTA 6? Ultimately, we're still in the dark on this one. The gaming giant has always been cagey on its projects, however, it seems like GTA V has been GTA 6's worst enemy as Rockstar has remained comfortable squeezing every penny out of its last outing. Will we ever see GTA 6? Some of us aren't so sure!
