We're staring down the gun barrel and can hear Tina Turner's iconic theme song from here. Preparing to shake and stir the gaming industry, a remastered version of 1997's GoldenEye 007 is reportedly just weeks away from being announced.

While the first-person shooter was largely popularised by DOOM in the early '90s, it was GoldenEye 007 that proved the genre had legs on home consoles. Rightly held as one of the best Nintendo 64 games of all time - if not one of the greatest games of all time - GoldenEye 007 is rightly in the history books. So, where's the inevitable new-gen overhaul?

From Skyrim to GTA V, publishers are savvy that while we have an appetite for new releases, there's also nothing better than a trip down memory lane with some old favourites. James Bond games have come and gone over the years, and while the likes of Nightfire and Everything or Nothing have been great entries, they pale in comparison to GoldenEye 007

According to Jeff Grubb's GrubSnax (via VGC), a GoldenEye 007 remake is nearing release and will be announced by Microsoft rather than the original publisher, Nintendo. "I think that Microsoft is going to be the one to announce that first," said Grubb. "I think this game is probably coming pretty soon, I’m thinking next couple of weeks."

VGC says Grubb backs up what its own sources have said, while January saw a cryptic release of Xbox game achievements for a potential GoldenEye 007. Interestingly, the 007 series is facing a milestone anniversary this year, with it being 60 years since Dr. No was released in cinemas. The big day is May 8, so that could be a day to mark in the diary.

Have We Has A GoldenEye 007 Remake Before?

Those who've stuck with the complicated legacy of GoldenEye 007 will know it's been lost in a rights quagmire. Given that Rare used to be owned by Nintendo, any form of release would require the House that Mario built, Microsoft, and MGM to all sign off on sharing the IP.

We've previously covered how a HD remake for the Xbox 360 was pulled just before its reveal, which allowed 2010's Wii remake/spiritual successor (also called GoldenEye 007) to exist. It's currently unclear whether a 2022 remake would be an Xbox exclusive or allow us all to pull our Walther PPKs, but it definitely sounds like we'll be seeing that martini-swilling spy before too long.
