We find ourselves shaken (and stirred) by the latest revelations that a next-gen remake of GoldenEye 007 could be in the works. It's been a whopping 24 years since James Bond sipped Martinis, jumped off the dam, and we all played as Oddjob in multiplayer. Still, the legacy of Rare's 1997 game continues, as the Nintendo 64 classic sits alongside The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Super Mario 64 as iconic titles from the era and some of the best games of all time.

Of course, this isn't the first time GoldenEye 007 has had a revamp, and if we are getting a next-gen remake, it'll follow in the footsteps of the HD reimagining that was released on the Nintendo Wii in 2010. After footage of the cancelled GoldenEye Xbox 360 remake made its way online earlier this year, players have been demanding that someone pull their finger out and get on with bringing the beloved shooter to a whole new fanbase. As usual, there's a complicated web of rights issues.

What's the GoldenEye 007 remake rumour?

A new trademark renewal from Danjaq, LLC has raised a few eyebrows. Danjaq is the holding company for the Bond licence, so the fact GoldenEye has been renewed for "electronic game software" doesn't take some MI5 intel to work out what's going on. The scoop was shared by XboxEra.com co-founder Nick "Shpeshal Ed" Baker. Baker was suitably pumped by the idea of a GoldenEye 007 remake and wrote "Wait... has Danjaq been listening to me finally?" when posting on Twitter.

The idea of this gaming legend getting a new lease of life soon exploded across the Twitterverse, as fans could barely contain their excitement. Someone else reminded us, the "game was very far along in development before one Nintendo exec axed the attempt to remaster it for Xbox. Maybe they found a way to compromise years later". In 2008, a 4K resolution remake that also offered 60 frames-per-second was axed just months before release. Since the footage recently made its way online, it could've sparked interest in revisiting this project. Added to this, Baker only just hyped a collab between Microsoft and Nintendo.

Will we get a next-gen GoldenEye 007 remake?

Considering Baker's ties to Xbox - and the fact Microsoft owns OG developer Rare - things could line up nicely. Yes, we have had Eurocom's reimagining of GoldenEye 007 in 2010 (arriving as Reloaded on Xbox 360 and PS3 a year later), but isn't it about time we revisited this fan-favourite? The Danjaq trademark was reportedly filed in August and made official on March 16 - meaning something might've been in the works for a while.

If it's not a next-gen remake/remaster of GoldenEye 007, it could simply be a port of the old game with warts and all. Despite the 2010 reimagining, the original GoldenEye 007 has never been ported to other systems. Either way, we can't wait to see what's on the way.

Some say it would be disappointing if Baker's "big" Microsoft and Nintendo news was a GoldenEye 007 remake, but then again, we'd be quite happy if that was the case. For many, the game was a big part of their childhood, which also proved the viability of first-person shooters on console. If it wasn't for GoldenEye, we arguably wouldn't have the likes of Call of DutyCounter-Strike: Global OffensiveApex Legends, or the Halo games. Let's give Mr. Bond the commendation he deserves!
