In the yellow corner, we have [insert favourite game here], and in the red corner, we have [insert favourite game here]. A battle of the ages where your favourite games are pitched against each other in a brutal battle royale-style elimination was always going to be divisive, but come on IGN, you did us dirty on this one.

There were no holds barred, as the likes of Titanfall 2 evicted Tom Nook from his Animal Crossing: New Horizons empire, Resident Evil 4 shuffled to the grave against The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and The Last of Us took a golf club to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

What is the best video game of all time?

A vote of "best" video game of all time has rattled the Twitterverse, so who took the crown? Over 10,000 votes were cast - leaving 2018's God of War as the victor. The 2018 reboot of the long-running franchise moved Kratos from Greek mythology to the snowy backdrop of the Norse gods and monsters.

In the end, it came down to two, as God of War beat 2013's Grand Theft Auto V. Remembering that GTA V is the most profitable entertainment product of all time, we're a little surprised Trevor Phillips didn't defeat Kratos. Then again, God of War is a god in its own right, and there's plenty of hype for the upcoming God of War: Ragnarok

When IGN announced the news on Twitter, the comments soon descended into chaos. One critic wrote, "Am I the only one who think God of war is just ok", while another added, "Nope. GOW was ok, but it wouldn't even make my top 100. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is my favourite game of all time". A third concluded, "It's a great game but this outcome is ridiculous."

Others criticised the whole metric as they wrote, "In a contest where Burnout beat Chrono Trigger Rise of the Tomb Raider beat Half Life 2 And Apex Legends beat Super Metroid. 'nuff said." Someone else rightly said, "How is ghost of Tsushima not even on this?"

However, someone rightly nipped the arguments in the bud when they simply wrote, "Don’t get salty everyone, it’s just a popularity contest, everyone has their own favourite game so no need to discredit other people’s choices."

How close was the race to the best video game of all time?

We were shocked that GoldenEye 007 bowed out early against Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare when it earned 28% of the vote, while we're also baffled The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time lost out to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim with just 37%. Hey, maybe we're just nostalgic for the days of the N64.

Other shockers included Fallout: New Vegas going out in the second round to GTA: San Andreas by a massive margin of 69% to 31%. There were also tears before bedtime when BioShock was bumped out of contention by Minecraft with 43% to 57%.

Straight out of the gate though, God of War pretty much had it in the bag. The first round saw the 2018 title trounce StarCraft with 90% of your votes, beat Portal 2 with 79%, and topple Skyrim with 64%. From there, things tightened up when GoW defeated The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt with 61%.

It was a race to the finish, when Kratos swung his Leviathan Axe at San Andreas with 61%. The might of Rockstar's racing franchise butted heads with the Ghost of Sparta, but in the end, Kratos won against GTA V with 62%.

Now is a good time to remind everyone it's just a poll - not the end of the days. Despite some calling out the whole thing and claiming it was aimed at a younger audience, there's no denying God of War has left behind quite the legacy since its release three years ago. If you aren't happy with the result, we suggest taking your complaints to Kratos himself. Good luck with that one.
