Ghost of Tsushima Sequel Teased For Next Sony State Of Play

Another shogun showdown could be on the way, as the latest rumours claim Sucker Punch Productions is working on a Ghost of Tsushima sequel. While news of a follow-up to last year's open-world adventure is nothing new, this is a major step toward a possible franchise future.

Since Jin Sakai put down his samurai sword at the end of Ghost, there have been reports of a sequel. The ending definitely left the door open for more stories, and in the tradition of PlayStation exclusives like The Last of Us and Marvel's Spider-Man spinning out into sequels, it was only a matter of time until Ghost of Tsushima got another outing. The question is, what's the latest update? 

What is the Ghost of Tsushima sequel?

According to noted leaker Nick "Speshal Nick" Baker, Ghost of Ikishima is an "expandalone" that will be part expansion, part standalone sequel. Although it ties to Ghost of Tsushima, you'll be able to buy Ikishima without owning the base game. Although Baker described it as being similar to Gears 5: Hivebusters, we're thinking it sounds a lot like Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

Then again, Baker's nod toward Hivebusters suggested it might not be as long as expected. Hivebusters released last year as a six-chapter single-player story tacked on to Gears 5, however, it was only a few hours long. Baker claims Ghost of Ikishima will launch in 2021, meaning there might not be long to wait until we get to revisit the story.

When could we know more about the Ghost of Tsushima sequel?

In terms of when we'll know more, the upcoming Sony State of Play looks like one to watch. After the PlayStation overlord missed out on this year's E3, all eyes are on the next State of Play for presumed updates on the console's various exclusives and how it'll rival Microsoft's all-star showcase that dominated E3 2021. 

Adding fuel to the fire that a Ghost of Tsushima sequel is on the way, Baker said he was "shocked" that so many people learned about Ghost of Ikishima so quickly. Finally, the sequel is reportedly coming to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 - which is interesting considering Ghost of Tsushima isn't natively available on the PS5. Putting all the pieces together, does Ghost of Ikishima also spark hopes of a next-gen upgrade for the OG Ghost? 

All of the above links to those numerous hirings at Sucker Punch, which have kept us guessing for months. Despite the PS4 coming to the end of its life cycle, Sony remains committed to releasing games on both generations of console. It's possible that a full-blown Ghost of Tsushima is also on the way, but just a year after the first game slashed its way into our lives, we expect it's a way off yet. In the meantime, Ghost of Ikishima can neatly fill the gap.
