Video game movies are a dime a dozen these days, and for once, that's not a bad thing. While the mere mention of a video game adaptation had us suffering from PTSD of having to sit through a Doom movie starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, the genre is currently firing on all cylinders.

When you look at the upcoming slate of video game movies, Ghost of Tsushima, Death Stranding, and Metal Gear are just a few of the major IPs poised to take over the box office. A little nearer to completion is Jared Hess' Minecraft movie, which many of us once wrote off as a joke.

Minecraft movie leaks win over critics

While Minecraft might be associated with kids, it looks like Hess is leaning into the wacky of Mojang's blocky builder to deliver a movie that isn't just for the little ones. We saw Illumination's The Super Mario Bros. Movie break records with an outing for the whole family, and now, new leaks suggest Minecraft is going down the same route.

A leaked style guide for the Minecraft movie has made its way online, showing off some truly bizarre designs. Instead of alienating fans, they love the "f**ked up" look. The style guide apparently first appeared on 4chan, and although the images were pulled (hinting at their legitimacy), they're now everywhere.

We get a proper look at Jack Black, who will be playing Minecraft's iconic Steve and is sporting his stable blue shirt and jeans, sporting a pickaxe. We also get terrifying reimaginings of a Creeper, a blocky bee, and a nightmarish sheep.

Over on X, one fan cheered, "These Minecraft movie designs got me got damn f**kin f**ked UP bro." Another added, "This movie gonna be goofy as hell 😭 And I’m all for it 😎," and a third said, "Holy sh*t that is sick." There were all of the usual complaints, but to be honest, we'll admit we're sold on the idea.

There's also a potential synopsis for the Minecraft movie, explaining how Black's Steve is captured by an evil presence called Malgosha, with "four fresh visitors" coming to the Minecraft world in an attempt to rescue him. Aside from Black playing Steve we still don't know who Jason Momoa will be playing, although we'd guess he'll be one of these visitors.

Minecraft's all-star cast also boasts Orange is the New Black's Danielle Brooks, The White Lotus' Jennifer Coolidge, SNL's Kate McKinnon, and Flight of the Concord's Jemaine Clement. All of these point to a comedic video game adaptation. With Minecraft due to release on April 4, we're hopefully not long away from a trailer.
