Happy Freddyversary because whether you like it or not, August belongs to Freddy Fazbear. ScottGames is celebrating a whole decade of Five Nights at Freddy's, and with so many mainline games and spin-offs under its belt, it's easy to forget the creepy and cutesy franchise is only 10 years old.

While we're not going to lie that we're disappointed the much-hyped Fortnite crossover isn't happening and that we're getting a Dead by Daylight collab instead, ScottGames is trying to make up for this with the surprise drop of a new game.

Five Nights at Freddy's: Into the Pit is releasing early

ScottGames took to X (formerly Twitter) to confirm that Five Nights at Freddy's: Into the Pit was released early in Japan. With it, the developer promised that the game would be released early in other territories on August 7. This means it's available now via Steam, with a console release supposedly coming later this year.

Boasting a suitably atmospheric trailer, developer Mega Cat Studios is taking the series in a new direction, giving us the first 2D Five Nights at Freddy's game - lovingly created in a retro pixel art style. Adapting the Fazbear Frights: Into the Pit anthology novel, you play a series of minigames set inside a rundown pizzeria.

Playing as a bored kid named Oswald, you enter the titular pit and are forced to travel between different time periods to collect clues. It's all while you're pursued by the mechanical monsters that have made the FNaF series the hit it is.

ScottGames is celebrating with a month of announcements and teases, and thankfully, most look better than the Five Laps at Freddy's karting game. Steel Wool is known for the Help Wanted and Security Breach games but has also announced the next mainline entry, Five Nights at Freddy's: Secret of the Mimic.

Mega Cat promises several different endings to promote Into the Pit's replayability, but coming in at $19.99/£16.75, it's pretty pricey for a side-scrolling adventure. Either way, with a movie sequel and more games than we care to count coming, the Five Nights franchise shows no sign of rusting like its robots.
