Five Laps at Freddy’s karting game savaged following trailer leak
Karting clones, when will it end? While it was way back in 1988 that Power Drift earned the honour of being the 'first' karting game, Super Mario Kart popularised the genre in 1992 and has held strong since. Even though Mario Kart continued to stand on the winner's podium, that hasn't stopped others from trying to muscle in on the market.
There have been some great karting games over the years (we still miss you, Double Dash) and some pretty dire ones (we're looking at you 007 Racing), but in between, we've had some weird and wonderful additions. From the likes of Crash Team Racing to M&M's Kart Racing, there was even the fan-made Bloodborne Kart.
Five Laps at Freddy's trailer leaks
Keen to expand the IP beyond the typical point-and-click survival horror that it's known for, Five Nights at Freddy's is hoping to burn rubber. ScottGames announced Five Laps at Freddy's on June 19, with developer Clickteam LLC promising a trailer is coming tomorrow (August 3).
As typical with these things, leakers got their first and have posted the trailer online in its entirety. The fact that these videos keep being taken down suggests that they're the real deal, but that might not necessarily be a good thing. Safe to say, the fan reaction hasn't been particularly positive toward Five Laps at Freddy's.
Set to some Stranger Things-inspired synth, we see all the usual suspects racing around in karts. Like in Mario Kart, there are a series of weapons and power-ups to help you race past your rivals. There's the typical lineup of tracks, with some leaning into the franchise's horror roots through the use of different weather.
Five Laps at Freddy's at least looks like it'll have a packed roster of favourites ranging from Chica to The Puppet, but if you hadn't told us this was an official game, we might've thought it was something whipped up by bored fans. It seems we aren't alone in our critiques, with others tearing the trailer apart.
One outraged FNaF fan wrote, "l genuinely hope this is a $3 game cuz that looks like absolute a** unironically Garfield Kart looks better." Others on Reddit agree, as one wrote, "This is the most low-quality looking game I have seen in a while," and a third concluded, "Man, this looks like shovelware in all of the worst ways."
Even though some think the Freddyverse has long since peaked in video games, ScottGames shows no sign of slowing down. The first game's 10th anniversary is coming up, with a packed roadmap promising a Steel Wool Announcement, mystery collab, and more.
A Five Nights at Freddy's karting game might not be what you asked for, and with rumours it was rushed to hit its August demo deadline, it's unlikely to give Mario Kart much to be worried about. Still, with the live-action Five Nights at Freddy's movie teaching us to expect the unexpected, we could be pleasantly surprised.
