Seriously, how hard is it to make a video game based on Game of Thrones? George R.R. Martin's Seven Kingdoms is steeped in thousands of years of lore, and with such a rich backdrop of source material, you could write a wholly new story largely without touching his precious canon.

Sadly, the success of HBO's Game of Thrones has only led to a slew of poor game spin-offs and one too many Defend the Castle-style rip-offs. The closest we got to a 'good' Game of Thrones title was Telltale's episodic adventure, but as we never got the hyped Season 2, it was a short-lived affair.

Game of Thrones: Legends gets torn apart online

News that a new Game of Thrones RPG was on the way should've had us gathering our bannermen and marching into battle with glee, but instead of the latest release being the next Fallout: New Vegas or Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, we've got a bizarre Candy Crush reskin.

Despite the ongoing popularity of the Thronesverse thanks to House of the Dragon redeeming the franchise from the abysmal Game of Thrones Season 8, it doesn't look like Game of Thrones: Legends will be restoring our faith in Westeros' gaming output. Safe to say, you don't tend to think of great RPGs when you think of mobile games.

Game of Thrones: Legends goes live today (July 25), with some having already pre-registered. Unfortunately, it's not the immersive RPG experience we expected, instead playing out as a Candy Crush clone. The game is the work of Zygna, which you might remember as the team behind Star Wars: Hunters.

Legends wasn't what we expected when we learned about a Thronesverse RPG, and when the pre-registration trailer was released, critics quickly tore it apart. One sceptic fumed, "I was excited because I thought this was going to be some kind of Shadow of Mordor, not another Candy Crush."

Another added, "I was so hyped, what the fck is this? Who tf looked at the fans and said “this game will do well” the telltale gave us more than this. How tf is this classified as an RPG?" and a third said, "I guess a game we can play while on the throne is the most this franchise can muster up."

Someone else concluded, "Yeah because a mobile Candy Crush copy is the Game of Thrones game we want. Nevermind an Open world RPG no no we need mobile games. What a joke." Seeing how starved of good Game of Thrones games we are, this is another Valyrian dagger to the heart.

Kit Harington returns for Game of Thrones: Legends

Weirdly, Game of Thrones: Legends has somehow managed to lure Kit Harington back as Jon Snow. The release trailer will air ahead of new episodes of House of the Dragon and includes Harington as himself, engrossed in someone else playing Legends. Kit's opponent bests him and says the iconic, "You know nothing Jon Snow."

As per Variety, Legends already includes House of the Dragon characters Rhaenyra Targaryen and Ser Criston Cole, with Zynga working on more content based on Season 2 and the upcoming A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms series from HBO. The question is, will anyone be sticking around to play?
