In the not-so-distant future, we're sure we'll look back at the FPS disaster of 2021. Halo Infinite, Battlefield 2042, and Far Cry 6 all appeared and quickly vanished, leaving Call of Duty: Vanguard to clear up. Even then, it's regarded by many as the 'worst' modern Call of Duty.

2021 was not a good year for shooters, but in 2024, some of the above are still clinging on for dear life. As we wait for news about what's next for Halo and Battlefield, the latter is trying to prove there still life in the old dog thanks to an upcoming Call of Duty-esque crossover.

EA called out for 'greedy' Dead Space crossover

Effectively giving Battlefield its own answer to CoD Zombies, EA is also taking a leaf out of Ubisoft's book and trying to replicate the crossover chaos of XDefiant. Another beloved EA IP is heading to the trenches as Dead Space attempts to breathe new life into Battlefield 2042.

We're big fans of Dead Space and its Necromorphs, but we'll admit it seems like an odd choice for the boots-on-the-ground Battlefield. It's true that Battlefield has acknowledged Dead Space before via Easter eggs, but a full-blown 'Outbreak' mode is something we thought we'd never see - namely because EA said we wouldn't.

Over on Reddit, players are pointing out an unfortunate April Fool's Day tweet from 2023, mocking the idea of a Battlefield x Dead Space crossover and wrongly getting our hopes up. Given that both franchises weren't in the sorry state they are, you can't help but feel the collab would've worked a lot better back then.

When asked what's changed for EA to make a U-turn and join these two gaming giants, the recurring answer is money. One fed-up gamer said, "Money laziness and greed??? Same as always, same takeaway: don't play 2042."

Someone else wrote, "Squeeze every last bit of money from the last 4 dudes that play the game," and a third said, "I thought it was fake until I saw the official shit. I’m just kinda confused more than anything. Like why? I mean money but like why?

When someone pointed out that the 'zombies' in Outbreak aren't even Necromorphs, another concluded, "That would mean they would have to actually put effort into modelling and doing something good in the game." As Call of Duty gets accused of undergoing its own 'Fortnitification', Battlefield is also blasted over this last-ditch attempt to keep the game away from the grave.

After EA denied accusations it had canned the proposed Dead Space 2 remake, we've been waiting to hear what's next for the IP. To learn it's coming to a game that's on life support for a limited-time event is not the news anyone wanted.

There was some potential in the naked killer robots of Battlefield's Killswitch mode, but at this point, there's a definite feeling that EA is simply stalling while it readies the next entry in the series. It's clear the publisher knows we love Dead Space, but apparently, it doesn't realise it's likely not enough to draw us back to Battlefield.
