The Destiny franchise is about to celebrate its tenth anniversary next month, but after a second series of layoffs at developer Bungie within a year, the community is wondering how long it'll be around for going forward.

And, while there had been speculation that Destiny 3 could be in development, Bloomberg's Jason Schreier has said that while a spinoff was in development, it wasn't Destiny 3 - and it's been cancelled anyway.

Destiny 3 isn't happening

On X (formerly Twitter), Schreier posted "Just to clear up some rumors floating around, Destiny 3 was not canceled because it was never in development, per people familiar. Bungie did some very early work on a spinoff project called Payback, but they canceled that a while ago. I'll have a story tomorrow with more info."

That's in contrast to a report earlier this year where a Reddit account correctly predicted the arrival of the Prismatic subclass added in The Final Shape, the game's latest expansion. The account also said Destiny 3 is in development under the title, but Schreier notes that this could be another project entirely.

While Schreier has promised a full story shortly, he's also noted that "Bungie gave Naughty Dog feedback that Naughty Dog found extremely helpful when making what was likely a very smart decision to not go all in on a service game," seemingly referring to the cancelled Last of Us multiplayer project.

Bungie recently revealed Destiny 2 Codename: Frontiers would be the next step for the franchise after the post-Final Shape Episodes, but no further information has been given.
