Modern Warfare 3 is here, or at least the campaign's early access has begun, and it closes out the rebooted MW trilogy.

While some streamers have been debating whether Call of Duty needs a campaign at all, some of the franchise's biggest social media accounts have taken to X/Twitter to compare their favourite single-player storylines in the 'current era' of the series.

CoD fans debate the best campaign in the series

Popular Twitter account ModernWarzone kicked things off with a surprising take, suggesting that 2020's Black Ops Cold War offered the 'best campaign in the current era of Call of Duty'.

The franchise's debut on new console hardware, BOCW was certainly well received, with a more branching narrative and return to the Cold War era that made the original Black Ops so beloved.

"This is certainly a take", joked CharlieIntel, but the account declined to offer its own favourite.

Others suggested Modern Warfare's 2019 reboot has the best 'modern' campaign, with the game introducing new versions of beloved characters like Captain Price.

Some even suggested the next game should be Call of Duty Ghosts 2, despite 2013's Ghosts being pretty forgettable outside of offering Riley, a German Shepherd who was a very good boy.

While the "current era" likely only extends back as far as Modern Warfare in 2019, it seems many weren't fans of last year's Modern Warfare 2 or 2021's Vanguard, which returned to WW2.

Which Call of Duty title has the most influential campaign?

In Call of Duty's 20-year history, there have been plenty of incredible campaign moments. From the series' earliest days in World War 2 to the Modern Warfare trilogy's epic conclusion, and Black Ops' time-hopping shenanigans, there's nothing quite like a blockbuster CoD campaign.

And yet, it'd be fair to say that one campaign has left a more indelible mark than most - Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

Setting the template for what would follow in multiplayer, while transferring the historical series to present day, Modern Warfare arrived in 2007 and despite a banger year (Halo 3, Super Mario Galaxy, Bioshock, Assassin's Creed, Uncharted, God of War 2 and more) stood as one of the best.

Between the sniper-focused All Ghillied Up mission, the shock of a nuke killing one of the game's protagonists, or the eerie silence of the AC-130 mission, Modern Warfare remains undefeated for many.
