Another Chadwick Boseman Tribute Discovered In Spider-Man: Miles Morales
Even in the midst of the global pandemic, 2020 has been a huge year for video games. Up there with The Last of Us Part II, Ghost of Tsushima, and (hopefully) Cyberpunk 2077, Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales swung into action as the title we all needed. As the colourful follow-up to 2018's Spider-Man, Miles Morales put this new hero front and centre and had a lot to say in the middle of the Black Lives Matter movement.
However, it wasn't just Miles being the hero of Harlem and beyond that has made Insomniac Games' action-adventure a treat for fans of the comics from which he came. The game is littered with Easter eggs to Miles' much larger world. Tragically, 2020 was also the year we lost Chadwick Boseman at the age of 43. While Miles Morales already honoured the Black Panther star with a post-credits message, it turns out there's an actual nod to him within the streets of the game.
Miles Morales Chadwick Boseman tribute: Where is it?
I found another tribute to Chadwick Boseman is Spider-Man: Miles Morales. 42nd Street becomes Boseman Way between 1st and 3rd Street. Mr. Boseman’s big breakout role was in the film, “42.” from r/marvelstudios
Posting on Reddit u/RollieDell showed off this touching tribute to Boseman. They pointed out how there's a street in Miles Morales that's called Boseman Way. If that wasn't enough, it's also taking the place of 42nd street - which is honour of Boseman's role in 42. The 2013 biopic about baseball player Jackie Robinson was Boseman's breakout role and undoubtedly put him on the path to becoming T'Challa in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Following Boseman's death in August, gaming fans couldn't get enough of this Easter egg. As the post blew up on Reddit, one person wrote, "With all these tributes I want INSOMNIAC to make a Black Panther game". Another mused, "Great tribute to the Wakandan king", and a third added, "Imagine running up buildings around THE WORLD!! T’Challa is a global superhero. From Wakanda to New York to the Jungle to South Korea".
There was also the point that there are several references to the number 42 littered throughout Miles' world. As well as the spider that bit him having the number 42 on its back in 2018's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, it was also the lottery number that got him into the Brooklyn Visions Academy. With 42 being so popular in the expanded Spider-Verse, it's refreshing to see this make its way into the game too.
We previously covered the heartfelt message to the fallen Avenger in Miles Morales' credits, but explained we wished there'd been something else in-game to honour him.
After Boseman's passing, Fortnite players flocked to the game's Black Panther statue to pay their respects. Black Panther was always planned to be part of the Marvel-themed Chapter 2 Season 4, however, the new POI became a monument to Boseman. It was so popular, many asked for it to remain part of the map forever. It was sadly removed as part of the revamped Season 5 map.
Alongside a statue to the late Stan Lee, it's great that Insomniac has immortalised these two giants in its game. With Miles Morales being a big hitter in 2020, it means millions of fans will get to enjoy these Easter eggs. At least we know Boseman will be permanently honoured like he deserves in Miles Morales.
