With the upcoming slate of superhero games based on Marvel properties set to 'go binary', Carol Danvers could soon join the growing ranks of heroes who make the jump from the silver screen to pixel form. While you can thank Insomniac Games for the resurgence in Marvel games, Captain Marvel wouldn't be the first name we'd expect.

Marvel games are multiplying, and from Motive's Iron Man to Insomniac's Wolverine, we've also got Skydance's Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, Cliffhanger's Black Panther game, Arkane Lyon's Blade, and a whole host of leaked projects from the Insomniac ransomware attack. Now, could the star-spangled heroine also get her time to shine?

A Captain Marvel game 'could' be on the way

According to V Scooper, a game 'related' to Captain Marvel is in development. There's no word on storyline, developer, or release date, but if we're taking to the skies as Captain Marvel, it would be a first for the video game industry. We're warned to take this with a pinch of salt as the leaker has a somewhat questionable track record.

Still, others loved the idea and would be excited to see where a spacefaring video game in the vein of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy could go. One fan said, "More Marvel games is a good thing imo. There is so much potential there. And games allow for bigger more complex storylines, much like a whole series of comic books."

Another added, "I'll take every AAA Marvel game they throw at us. Hopefully there's other studios working on a new Hulk game, Daredevil game, Thor game, etc," and a third agreed, "I don't trust these scoopers, but I'd be happy if this was true. I'm still pressed that they cancelled her expansion (among others) for Avengers."

Captain Marvel made her videogame debut in 2006's Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, although that was under the Genis-Vell persona. Mar-Vell then popped up in 2011's Marvel Super Hero Squad Online and 2015's Marvel Heroes, while the legendary Jennifer Hale voiced Carol Danvers' Captain Marvel in 2014's Disney Infinity 2.0.

Some have pointed out that the wording of the tweet could mean that Captain Marvel will simply feature in the game, but given how the OP puts the emphasis on Danvers, we could easily see her leading the title. With so many people having taken the name of Captain Marvel over the years, a video game based on the mantle could go in several directions.

Still, with an overpowered GOAT like Captain Marvel potentially leading a game, we're reminded of the whole Superman conundrum. Rumours that Rocksteady was working on a Superman game never came to pass, with many concerned that the character was too powerful and would make their outing boring.

If (and it's a big if) some form of Captain Marvel game is in the works then we'll happily take it. After Marvel's Avengers botched the landing and left Danvers off-world, it's well past time for her to take flight in the ever-expanding world of superhero video games.
