Capcom accused of ‘censoring’ Dead Rising remaster
When it comes to the cornerstones of the Capcom catalogue, most tend to think of Resident Evil and Monster Hunter. However, what about others like Street Fighter, Dragon's Dogma, and Dino Crisis (maybe one day, our precious)? A surprise entry from the Capcom vaults is ready to make its return with the Dead Rising remaster.
The OG Dead Rising released back in 2006, taking Frank West into the zombie-infested The Willamette Parkview Mall. For those who watched 1978's Dawn of the Dead or its 2004 remake, you'll know the kind of theme Capcom was going for. It's an underrated Capcom classic, but now, it's coming back with a bang.
Dead Rising accused of censoring Cheryl
While Frank hasn't quite become the Chris Redfield of the zombie-shooting world, he's been a mainstay of the Dead Rising universe. There are other characters you meet along the way, with the seductive Cheryl being little more than eye candy in the original game.
With Cheryl being the only survivor who can score an 'Erotica' bonus and the Cheryl's Request scoop involving Frank photographing her in a series of provocative poses, we'd always imagined her character would be getting an overhaul. It looks like Capcom has changed Cheryl for the Dead Rising remaster, but some aren't happy.
Instead of Cheryl wearing fishnet stockings and a strappy dress that leaves little to the imagination, she's been given a less revealing outfit and seemingly removed her stockings. As you can imagine, these relatively minor changes haven't gone down well with a certain subgroup of gamers.
One critic moaned, "This game will cost $70 but the OG will always be better," while another added, "It’s the norm at this point, which is why no one should buy remasters." Someone else sarcastically joked, "Oooh noooo, now you can't j**k off with the videogame..."
Capcom has been addressing some of its more dated representations of women more recently, with Resident Evil 4 delivering a more mature Ashley, making Ada Wong less of an object sexualised by her outfit, and dialling back Luis' sexism. Of course, the modders already claim they're going to restore Cheryl to her original form.
A lot has changed since 2006, and like Rockstar Games has been forced to face some of its outdated moments in Grand Theft Auto, it's good to see that Capcom isn't set in its ways or simply sticking a glossy sheen over Dead Rising and repackaging it for $70. At the end of the day, is not being able to ogle a bunch of pixels really going to stop you from buying a game?
